Real world myths and legends: Who's Epic Level?

I think, Odisseus was quite epic. Not only is he the one with the bow, no one else could string, but he killed lots of guests, who wanted to marry his wife (I can not remember how many).
And he was reasonably the most brightest of all the greek heroes.

other epics:
- Ecthelion from Silmarillion (slew a Balrog and died (but only after he had faught a long battle).
- There are some in the Mahabarata, who are realy epic.
- Cirdan (all, who have led their people for so long must be epic)

I consider Lionheart and Saladin epic because their deeds and actions are quite significant, they were the two best medieval generals/warlords (in my opinion, anyway). Their legends just seem epic to me.
As for Robin Hood, his legend like that of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, just won't go away, nobody's sure if there were real people behind the legends or not or when in history the events actually took place. Besides his skill with the bow is pretty much unsurpassed, he is the example of darring do and the hero/voice for the little poeple.

I guess these people feel larger then life to me, and two actually existed.

Greetings!

Well, in real life, in the Viking siege of Paris in if I recall, the 860's AD, there was a great Viking champion that led the assault. At this time, the vikings had acquired Clydesdale-like horses, as the vikings also tended to be very large people. Among them is faithfully recorded a great champion, simply called "Rolf The Walker"--he was so titled, because he was so tall, and so massive, that there was no horse that could carry him! Thus, while the rest of the *tens of thousands* of Viking invaders rode to the attack, Rolf, *walked*.

It seems that when one looks at a Clydesdale--they are about six feet and more, at the shoulder, and huge creatures, that one can imagine Rolf "The Walker" as being well over seven feet in height, possibly over eight feet in height, and weighing easily over 400-500 pounds.

*That* has to be worthy as an epic level champion!:)

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK

Imhotep for an Egyptian Epic character/archetype?

I assume you're talking about the recent movie version of Imhotep. The historical Imhotep was a little different. Here's something I stole from an Egypt based website:

Description: Not really a god in the truest sense of the word, Imhotep was a deified man. He was originally the chief architect, grand vizier, physician, and scientist under Zoser (III Dynasty, c.2635-2570 BC). He designed the Step Pyramid at Saqqara and formulated the architectural theories that would lead to the construction of the Pyramids of Giza only a few generations later. He was also an accomplished astronomer and physician.

Architect PrC anyone?

Actually the step pyramid at Saqqara(or Sakkara) is still around and in good shape, compared to the big 3 pyramids that everyone sees in pictures.

More trivia on Rolf "the Walker"

Note that viking Rolf who conqered northern France (and yes, sacked Paris but was repelled) and became the first Duke of Normandy (Northman's Land). What most don't know is that William "the Conquerer" was a direct descendant of his (3 or 4 generations later...). And as we all know, William led the Normans who conquered England.

A'koss!

How about....

epic-
Archimedes expert/smarty pants prC
Queen Mab (Probably done already) sorcerer/mage
Orphieus bard/druid?

not epic-
Sherlock holmes expert/fighter/rogue

Fairy Tales

Epic-

The Evil Fairy (sleeping beauty) sorcerer
Since putting castles to sleep was already qualified as epic (see luthien)
The Pied Piper (bard)
Charmed a whole city/town of rats and then children and opened a hole in a mountain side to some sort of other plane:eek: :p

In the movie, Gandalf apparently summoned and talked to a hummingbird, and it went and fetched the Eagle. Maybe he DOES have a few Druid levels... hmm Sor6/Dru3/Ftr10?

IMO, it was a moth. Hummingbirds dont usually have antenna, and hang out near places that HAVE NO FLOWERS BECAUSE THE STUPID ORCS KILLED THEM ALL! Stupid stupid orcs, ripping up those ironwoods! WHY? That just was not cool!

Merlin (duh)
Jesus (someone had to say it)
Moses (ditto)

I don't think Jesus, Moses, or Merlin are Epic-Level. Merlin didn't do much beyond prophesy and motivate. Jesus and Moses are probably better represented as normal humans (Expert in one case, and Aristocrat in the other), who received the Template 'Chosen of God'.
