Reaper's Legendary Encounters, August 6th

Maybe its just the choices in miniatures but they all look brown and ugly to me. Even the skeletons look tan colored instead of white.

Now, I am colorblind, but I rarely make that mistake.

I personally think it would have been silly and a bad business decision for Reaper not to have made "mooks". What about the customer base that doesn't have access to second hand sellers on ebay? The person who just got into D&D and is looking for some minis at the store and needs mooks? Not to mention those that want to get into their wargame and need these figures.

They are bringing out alot of the DDM rares, but to depend solely on these is placing your profit in the hands of what another company does and decides. Maybe to those of us who choose to shop the second market, it doesn't make sense...but there's another market that doesn't use online shopping and may want non-random minis.

I think the bulk of the posters here are missing the point. Reaper is offering a less expensive, game ready alternative to their metal minis line. They aren't in direct competition or even swayed by the DDM lines. If you have never purchased a Reaper mini before, then I can understand the confusion.

DDMs are NOT the industry standard, the round bases are not the norm (sort of) in the wargame business and the randomized nature is a rip-off of Mage Knight. Reaper has been cranking out hero and monster figs for many years to fill the void left when Ral Partha went under due to their licensing fiasco with TSR as they went under. If you want to see what a particular figure may look like if it is released, go to their website and find it using their "fig finder". You should get an image of a metal sculpt, which is all their plastics are, converted mainline sculpts.

These figs will more than likely be BANNED from WotC competitions, so DDM is pretty much a non-entity when it comes to Reaper releases. RPG minded folks will find these figs are much more useful than those that play DDM & RPGs or those that play DDM exclusively. As for the orc sculpts, they harken back to 'classic' orcs (green skin, pig like faces, short than humans), I think the modern D&D images are the ones that are screwed up.

Pretty much my feelings. I'll be all over these. I can always use more orcs, and I don't care much at all for the crappy D&D ones. The minotaur and ogres will be good additions too. I'll probably try that dipping technique myelf and see how they turn out. You right that I don't think they are making these just to fill in gaps in another product line, people have bitched about not being able to buy orcs and stuff without buying a lot of packs or searching ebay and now they can do so. The bases are fine, I used tons of reaper and the bases are the same, fine for roleplaying games.

Very good call indeed!

For those unfamiliar with the technique -

Dipping
Here is a cool article on dipping figures in poly stain for speed painting. I have used it on Eastern Indians to great effect!
DIPPING FIGURES IN MINWAX POLYSHADE
Link stolen from my painting thread over in the art forum.

I've painted most of these, but I'll buy a few to support Reaper's endeavor.

So does this dipping eliminate any washes? Just lay down base paints and then dip?

Yeah, it's sort of like Monopoly pieces being "banned" from chess tournaments.

I think he was just trying to say that these aren't intended to be used for DDM games so they are not trying to fill in gaps in that line or stuff like that. At least that is how I took it.
