[Recruiting, Greyhawk] OSRIC 2.0 Game (Has 2 Players, Needs 2-4 More)

However seeing as this is labelled as a OSRIC 2 game . . .

TheOneRing what's your ruling?

I should note that I actually roled a 7 for cha. Being a half-orc brought it down to a 5.

I'd still be happy playing a dwarf or human fighter. I'd get to role those percentiles for strength:).

Whatever you want to do or play is fine by me, so long it is legal within the OSRIC rules.

...hence I have no choice but to play an assassin since we are playing OSRIC and not AD&D 1e. Like I said, I don't mind. Assassins are fun, and I was thinking about playing a thief in the first place, of which assassin is a sub-class.

Incidentally, I do have some questions about how you interpret the assassination ability, The One Ring.

1) Can I use it against undead, either in general, or only specific undead with weak spots (e.g. vampires with stakes)?
2) Are you putting any special limitations on it, such as weapon type (e.g. melee only) or range?

I only ask this because a technical reading of the assassinate ability is pretty broad (even broader in OSRIC than in 1e I believe), and I know in AD&D a lot of refs tended to limit the ability with house rules. I just want to know what to expect. If I take a black pudding by surprise, I want to know if it is worth my time trying to assassinate it or if my time might be better spent preparing something else like Greek fire.

Please feel free to refrence my username as TOR. It'll save you on keystrokes.

1) In regards to undead with weak spots, you may use your assasination and backstab abilities against them.
2) I hadn't thought about this too much. I'm glad you broought it up. Add 20 feet to the increment of all weapons. Add Dagger to the list of weapons that have an incremet; 20 feet. Instead of weapons having a -2 to hit per increment, it is lessened to -1to hit per increment.

If I take a black pudding by surprise, I want to know if it is worth my time trying to assassinate it or if my time might be better spent preparing something else like Greek fire.
As per the black pudding, I'm gonna say Greek Fire and salt against oozes.

This is a low level game, so don't plan on encountering too many puddings and oozes.

Ok, so no assassination of undead without weak spots, oozes or puddings; got it.

I'm surprised the dagger isn't listed as a ranged weapon already. At any rate, I didn't take proficiency.

I may switch out club proficiency for oil. Still undecided on that one. I'm also going to buy some general equipment aside from weapons before we start. I just need to cogitate on it for a while. Any idea when we will be starting?

Yuck... I rolled...

Str 15
Dex 5!
Con 13
Int 11
Wis 11
Cha 16

With a dex like that I want to stay out of the front lines, but my intelligence and wisdom rolls don't allow for a cleric or magic-user. Looking at the minimum requirements, cleric may be the best bet.

Based on the minimums, I think cleric is actually your only option. I am surprised to see us all rolling so crappy. I just started a RL OSRIC campaign the other night and all of my players at least had a choice in their class. One of the things I noticed about OSRIC from the beginning is how much more restrictive the ability score requirements are. In AD&D 1e only a few classes had requirements for more than one or two abilities. In OSRIC, all classes seem to require at least a 6 in all but one ability score. I happen to think that is probably by design, but I'm not sure what the designers sought to gain from being more limited in class choice than AD&D was.

I'm not ranting. I think OSRIC is great in a number of ways that AD&D never was. But it is an interesting observation.

I think it's fun to play a character with an attribute limitation. It often gives more personality. Here is what I got going...rolled nice for hps... fixed the gold...

I'm going out of town for the Holidays on Saturday evening and won't be back until riday afternoon. I could post up the background, info on your first quest and the IC thread before I leave. If you want to wait till after the Holiday I'll understand.

Here's a map of the area the characters will be adventuring in:
