Reflex save and Items- Rules Q.

Sadrik

First Post
I have a rules question:

Items that are unattended must make saves.
Characters that roll a 1 on a reflex save must roll a save on the first four items on the chart on PHB pg. 177.

If a character or creature dies and then later a fireball hits them.

Do the items get a savings throw based on the character or the item (basically do they become unattended items)?

Do you only make saves for the first four items?

What if the fireball dropped the character or creature? Would they become considered unattended items?

All items that most recently belonged to a person who is now dead are considered unattended. All items make a save.

If the fireball kills the creature, it's treated as though they were attended. The fireblast is instantaneous, so they were attended when the blast hit the character. He died at the same time, but at that moment, they were attended.

Unless he rolled a 1. In which case, it's the first four items rule.

Only magical items get a save if they're unattended. Non-magical items get toasted.

Only unattended magical items get a saving throw. Non-magical items do not get a saving throw and simply take whatever damage is dealt.

They roll a save on one item randomly selected among the 4 most exposed items.

Thanks for the replies.

These are wacky rules btw.

Here is a follow up.

Do magic items have evasion?

Suppose there is an unattended +1 "leather" cloak of resisance (CL 5, hardness 2, hp 5, +4 reflex save) and it is hit with a 30 point fireball. (note I had to cross reference PHB and DMG to get this info. Should be listed for every item and magic item)

Because fire damage autmatically deals half damage to hardness, on a failed save it takes 13 hp of damage (30/2 = 15 - 2 hardness = 13) destroying it. If it made its save it would take 5 hp of damage 30/2 = 15/2 = 7 -2 hardness = 5) destroying it. Or do they have evasion?

No, of course items don't have Evasion. Unless they have class levels in rogue, ranger or monk. :)

Yes, these rules are tough on dead characters' equipment.

When it gets really nasty: Not only are all items owned by a dead character unattended, but his corpse counts as an unattended, non-magical item as well.

So not only can a fireball destroy all his gear rather easily, but it can turn his corpse to ash as well, requiring a Resurrection instead of a Raise Dead.
