And from the "They'd Never Have That, But What The Heck" file...

Once per turn, as a free action, choose an opponent wielding a smaller weapon than yours. Make an opposed Charisma(Intimidate) check. On a success, you gain advantage on all your attacks against that opponent until they can no longer see your weapon, or you choose another opponent to apply this to.

That's not a sword...

In my 4e game we introduced 5e style advantage and replaced the use of action points to make various skill checks to gain advantage on your next attack. It was all improvised. Kick a chair at your opponent (Athletics vs Acrobatics), roar in anger (intimidate vs insight), swing on the chandelier and try to drop on your opponent (acrobatics vs athletics)...added some interesting cinematics to encounters.
 

there's a rule in the 4e DMG that says the cleave must be triggered by a strike on a viable opponent.

Asmodeus suffering some auto-damage is less important than Asmodeus having options to counter it.
I'm not saying I accept the argument - I don't care if it's rats or kobolds or Pit Fiends, I'm not worried about Asmodeus being killed by cleave damage in any actual 4e combat that would ever actually be run at any table.

I'm just saying that the same complaints would be run about a cleave-style solution that doesn't also involved factoring in AC - so I guess I'm echoing [MENTION=11821]Obryn[/MENTION]'s concerns from one of the other threads on this.

Best solution: Leave Damage on a miss in, add an alternate GWF option for people who don't like DoaM.

My consolation to you for not allowing damage on a miss is that you can cast the spell or perform the feat again during the encounter. You do not waste any spell or feat on a failure to damage.
 

I like advantage on damage because you get to roll more dice and rolling more dice is fun.

I do like GWF having reach too. That's also pretty good. But maybe too tied to a battle map.

How about a hit granting advantage to the next attack on the target?

I think [MENTION=77]Talath[/MENTION]'s idea of having to make the original attack roll high enough to also hit the other creature is a nice fix. If you would've hit Asmodeus anyway with that attack, all you've done with the bag o'rats is decided to do less damage to Asmodeus than you did to a rat. :)

I like how that takes [MENTION=63508]Minigiant[/MENTION] 's "lose your reaction" idea and makes it more consistent and seamless...but maybe essentially having advantage on almost EVERY attack after the first highlights the weirdness of a hit giving your next attack some benefit...hm...
 

I like the idea of having your con bonus to your attack.


Or if you miss, then add your con bonus and if that hits you do str bonus damage.
