Rescue Me

So who out there besides me is watching this show? So far it's been pretty god this season. I'm just wondering how many episodes there are this year. Also, did anyone else catch the promo in week one of RM for The Shield? It said soon. As well, when I saw the reports on The Shield they were talking about them showing the last 10 episodes of season 6 at the beginning of 2007, which implies they are showing some sooner. That and the promo talked about a special 10 episode run coming soon. So much good stuff going on over at FX nowadays!

Excellent show, not to mention a godsend for the summer TV season. The storylines for the main characters are really developing in an interesting and entertaining way. One of the rare shows that you don't *have* to watch from day one because the characters follow stereotypes more or less. But then they are turned on their ear, twisted or flat out blasted into oblivion.

Quick example: Probe is gay? Bi? Lonely? Finally found someone? Interesting considering his relationship arc from the last two seasons. And at the same time he's dealing with always being on the bottom rung at the firehouse. It's great how the writers flip the B-story and A-story back and forth according to the theme of that particular show or even sequence/scene.

Who knew Leary had the acting chops to pull off a deplorable, haunted dreamer?

I'll stop before I start gushing even more but along side Grey's Anatomy this is one of the best written shows on the air with characters that could be real.

As for The Shield - I'll be picking up DVD boxed sets of it as I haven't watched a single moment yet. It's always comforting to have highly praised shows in the hopper that I can look forward to watching somewhere down the line. For the record, I just started watching the West Wing (just started S3).

I missed this week's episode, but I love the show. My GF doesn't care for it because of how it portrays women, which I can see, but it's kind of a male soap.

What drives me nuts, but makes the show interesting, is how it seems so often that the characters make the wrong choices. It's odd that the characters seem so shallow (and many are in some ways), yet are so deep because they are shallow.

It doesn't actually portray the guys in a much better light either. It's hard not to see it as a male driven show as it's an all male fire-fighting crew. It's definately a darker dramedy.

True, but her specific complaint is that the women are treated more like sex objects than anything else. It's sad the one girl fire fighter left, as she was mostly the exception, but for the most part that seems to be true. The only ones exempt from that are the 2 the Chief deals with (His wife and neighbor), and the kids. Tommy's cousin's widow and his wife have other dimentions, but they're still treated by the script as sex objects in many ways.

But, this is from the man's perspective, and more importantly, the imperfect man's perspective, so some of that is understandable.

Heck, sometimes the men are treated like sex objects. The current storyline has one of our boys as a boy toy for an older woman. The actress that played the female fire fighter got another job from what I understand. From an interview I saw recently, Andrea Roth's character (Tommy's wife) says she will be hated by most fans before season's end. I suspect this last episode will be ironic. The jist of it for Tommy was him trying to leave sperm at a sperm bank so if he died without directly providing a male heir, there would still be a chance of it. Then he goes over to his wife's place to deal with their impending divorce issues and he and her get in a rough fight that ends in sex (at first it looked like an almost rape, but then her reaction and post reaction when his brother gets there indicate otherwise). My guess is, she gets pregnant and either at the end of this season or next season we find out she's having a boy. She will also probably tell everyone it's his brother's knowing full well it's not.

We are all, thankfully 'imperfect' btw. "Perfect" people are quite annoying.

The reason the female characters are shown that way is that that is how the male characters view and treat them. The fire house is very much a fraternity style environment, and most of the characters, even Jerry (who should be old enough to know better) are basically overgrown adolescents who see women as little more than things to have sex with, and helpers to cook and clean for them.

And then they wonder why all of their relationships go down the toilet.

I was left thinking the same thing after this weeks ending.

Rescue Me is just about the only show on right now that I look forward to every week. FX has really done a bang-up job with their original series.

I was under the impression that Nip/Tuck would be up next, but if it's The Shield, I definatly won't be complaining. I like Nip/Tuck a lot, but The Shield is my favorite show on TV.

This is how I experienced The Shield. I just got into it during season five, and was so impressed that I went to ebay and picked up seasons one through four (which I've watched all the way through three times). I can't wait for October when season five is out on DVD.
