• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Resistance is futile... you will upgrade to 3.5!

We will be embracing it wholeheartedly.

We've been adapting some of the 3.5 rules as they became public knowledge, for example, the Haste change. (Haste enchantments had already been house-ruled.)

We'll also be using it as an opportunity to reallocate our characters using point-buy, clean up some of the multiclassing and PrC's we've gotten into, pool and redistribute funds and rebuy equipment.

Overall this makes our PCs and DMs equally happy.

My monk (new to a long-running campaign that's had better than average loot) will have more money for gear, better attacks due to the UBAB/flurry change, and will effectively get a free feat due to the increased flexibility.

My elven, two war fan wielding fighter will have somewhat lower stats overall due to point-buy, but is dropping out of a custom Charisma-based prestige class so that'll be fine. I'm also dropping out of Tempest and enjoying HUGE economies on feats -- swapping out 6 feats no longer needed for PrC requirements, 1 rendered ineffective (Power Attack) and 1 obsolete (Ambidexterity) and perhaps Finesse too. Or I may decide to go with a quarterstaff, or a shield-bashing type. At any rate, I'll have a far better fighter in 3.5 than I do now.

I discussed it with my group for a while, and we figured something out:

We just like Third Edition.

So we're sticking with it. We've taken a while to learn the rules, and we'll be importing some house rules from 3.5, but... we're very happy with Third Edition.

For me its money.I dont want to buy 3 books. And to be honest Im still digesting the changes as discussed here and in the Wizards pubs. While many people can and have pointed out the need for various changes, I still feel its change for change sake-and it could have been integrated into a single "update" guide, similarr to the upcoming (I think) Forgotten Realms Players Guide.

I like 3e and my attitude is wait and see.

Ill check out the SRD, but right now my players and I are happy with what we have.
Even if they were giving the printed versions out for free, we would probably keep the rules we have set now. Too much time has been spent coming up with housrules we think are fair and work well, besides who wants to sit there and do all the conversion work.

For me the decision is about a) being pretty satisfied with 3.0 as it is especially since it's only been 3 years since 3.0 -- heck we're on our first campaign in each of my 3 groups, b) not being super-interested in devoting the time to learning the revised rules (I think the 3.0 to 3.5 switch might be just as hard as the 2e to 3e switch because you start out with assumptions about how things work). That said, if one group was interested in switching I'd go for it as soon as there's adequate electronic support.

I'm not switching for a variety of reason. First, I'm not really satisfied with the changes. Too many were unnecessary. The few changes I do like I can incorporate into the game I'm in now. I'd have to like everything (well almost everything) to be convinced to shell out cash so soon after 3.0 was published, which brings me to my next major factor: money. I've got a lot of real world™ expenses right now between buying a house and getting married and the usual expenses of life. I can't afford to buy something I'm only marginally satisfied with. Plus, my group will not be switching over for many of the same reasons, so no need there.

However, should I see them used at a convention I will likely pick them up. I will also download and likely print the SRD once its out. This will aid in any freelance work I may do for a d20 company. But this is likely as far as I'll go. I suppose its possilbe I'll break down in and buy it as an impulse buy. The only other company I supported fully was Agents of Gaming, and they're sadly kaput (although I'll be buying Mongoose's B5 stuff!), so its not like I'll be buying any other games asside from the occasional beer and pretzel game (Munchkin, CheapassGames, Chez Geek, Beer, etc).

Wow. I've got my gaming group here in Austin, two separate groups I used to game with in Houston--and everyone's really looking forward to the new edition.

Doesn't make us right or the people who don't want to switch wrong. I'm just surprised at the discrepency.

Of course, in my case, it's a good thing I do like the new system, since I'd pretty much have to use it anyway. I have to learn it for my D20 work, and I'd just confuse myself trying to play a different edition than I write. ;)

I wonder if there will be enough non-converters to sustain a 3.0 d20 market of any appreciable size.

(Me, I'd be tempted to write a 3.5e book full of less nerfy spells. ;) )

Interesting.

I guess I just see the changes as all very much in the "it is still the d20 system" camp, and thus not a major issue to change over. I for one enjoy the aspects of change that appear to be rendered upon the Ranger -- that class needed SOMETHING to make it interesting.

Although I agree it can be an expense... it is not too much of one (in my case) and so that will not stop me.

I am somewhat concerned about the whole electronic support issue. This one has me a bit concerened. But it is too late to turn back now. I sold my 3.0 books a nearly two weeks ago and have already pre-ordered the 3.5 books from Talon Comics...

As far as the "sustain a 3.0 market" concept -- I see this as "not likely" at best. There are a few companies that might attempt it that could be semi-successful, but I do not see them taking the chance.

Oh well...

Still, some good thoughts here. Keep it up.
