Revision Spotlight on Gnomes

Actually, there doing away with save or die spells as well. Witness the new desintergrate. Then there's the reduction of spell penertration and greater spell penertration. Everything we've heard of the new editon reduces the powers of casters.

You're welcome.

It will be just as easy to munch out a wizard as ever, just like it's easy to much out any class (except maybe monk) - just have a look at the sultans of smack thread.

What I'm more concerned about is if the average, non-munched wizard will be able to perform well alongside other classes under 3.5e rules, when a lot of the sneak peeks I've seen are either spell nerfs (hold person springs to mind) or melee buffs (Greater weapon focus/specialization).

The only nerfs I've seen so far are for the more notorious spells, like harm, haste and polymorph, and the instakill spells like disintegrate. If your non-munched wizard is flinging around old dependables like fireball and lightning bolt, nothing is going to change. In fact, talk is that energy and spell resistances are going down, so the non-munched wizard may even have an easier time of it.

<picky>Spell Focus</picky>

A few thoughts: First up, disintegrate is the only save or die spell (that I'm aware of) that we've seen modified. Even in its current form it still seems to hugely outperform the evocation damage spells. If I'm going up against a foe decked out with the usual resistances am I going to go for the SR/fort/40d6 or SR/ref/15d6-cold resistance?

It really does depend on how SR, ER and DR are changed in 3.5. If you take away haste from a 3.0 wizard and send them into the fray using evocations their damage will be unimpressive alongside the fighting classes, limited in its application (you can't keep throwing fireballs after they're in melee with your party - a fact many people seem to forget when they talk about how powerful aoe spells are), and they will run out of it fast (limited spell pool). Meanwhile the fighter types can just keep on swingin' all day long.

Sure the mage has all kinds of out-of-combat options that non-mages need items to replicate, but combat is a big part of D&D, like it or not, and most people like to shine in combat from time to time, munched or not. Utility guy is a job better suited to an NPC.

Nothing like a maybe doing 15 hp. Avg 30 dmg on 10d6 save for half.

Well then, people should just shut up, stop whinging and wait until the books actually come out, shouldn't they?

Thank you for putting in words what I am trying to say. I don't want the casters to dominate the game, I just dont want them to seem like the fighters lackeys. That only works in novels, where the same person (the author) is running them all.

I'm also worried about a trend that hasn't yet been confirmed, but all evidence we have points to. The casters are being limited outside combat as well. To whit the 1/minute level on bulls strength etc, and polymorph self.

Now where would be the fun in that?

After all this is a discussion board, not a sit-quietly board. :p

This is the jokes forum?

Oops I thought I was on D&D rules. :o

So this guy goes to the doctor and says "Doctor, I can't stop singing The Green Green Grass of Home".
"Ah" replies the doctor, "you've got Tom Jones syndrome"
"Is it common?"
"It's not unusual"
