Rewriting domains

I'm currently toying with my setting domains and I've decided that I'm going to rewrite several PHB domains to help work in setting spells and also sometimes a setting spell is more appropriate to the domain (in my mind) than the original. Anyone else done this?

Yes and infact I've even gone so far as to let my players 'design' their own domain lists (with DM approval of course). Its been fun thinking up Domain 'themes' and then going through the spell lists to find things that fit the theme
 


I am also working on such. One thing I do differently is that I grant each several possible Domain Powers. The first time it is chosen a single power is gained. If - instead of a second domain - the same is chosen again, they can choose to take another two powers associated with the domain. So for fire their is turning water elementals / rebuking fire elementals. There is also seeing clearly through heat haze, smoke, flame, and ash. And there is fire resistance 1 per 5 HD of cleric. So a cleric that simply took only the one domain would have far more power - but only in the realm of fire, as they would lack the several bonus spells and the utterly different domain power (from another collection of such in another domain).

I'm still working on the idea, however, and it is part of my general reworking of many aspects of the system (not the least of which is the cleric class itself - basically a lay on hands variant of the cloistered cleric with no spontaneous casting).
 



I'm reworking the domains as well, but to a larger degree. First of all I decided that there will be many less spells in the game I'm making so the idea of extra spells from domains doesn't fit in it. So I ditched the domain spells altogether and I'm making each domain give 3 different abilities, one at 1st level, one at 10th and one at 20th.
 

I did somethin about that a very long time ago, when I only the PHB domains.

I considered the idea of having much less spells on the cleric list (about half the normal), mostly spells which dealt with protections, healing, buffing and certain divinations. Instead, I thought it would have been nice to move all the other, less "clerical" spells into domains, which at that point should have had more spells than before.

I'm afraid it won't be easy to find the notes where I've written those modified domains, but at that time I though it would have made a nice change for a setting where clerics of different deities had more different abilities.
 

The only thing I've been thinking about doing is instead of rewriting the basics the fit my setting [Healing Domain seems just fine for example without modding], but I looked through the Domains and found like 2 civilizations Domains, 1 community, 1 city, etc. for like 5 Domains which evolve around basically the same thing. What I've been thinking about is combining them all into one and allowing players to choose 1 of several Domain abilities [cause all those Domains have different spells AND abilities]. I've just finished my list like yesterday and will probably start working on the combining on Friday.
