You are correct. It is not that important.

However, to some of us, numbers like this just jump out at us as outrageous the moment we read the source material.

Just like the original topic of this thread (which we have side tracked a little), some of us read 1.4 million people in a city and immediately wonder if WotC has a typo.

Later on, we realize that they were being serious (as they are serious on some of the more uber stuff in ELH, which I picked up before gaming last night btw), and we just shake our heads. Different strokes for different folks. To some of us, the more ludicrous stuff is precisely that, ludicrous and potentially requiring house rules. YMMV. :)

I can't figure out how they got the spellcraft DCs for some of the Epic level spells. In particular, a lot of the spells with permanent duration seem way off.

The simplest example is Epic Repulsion on page 79. Base DC is 14, *5 for being permanent gives is DC 70 and -18 for the mitigating factor gives us 52, the listed DC. So far so good.

Now look at Enslave on the same page. Base DC 19 + 11 for stricter compulsion +20 for 1 action casting time is 50. Multiplying that by 5 for the permanent duration gives us 250 and the -50 mitigating factor leaves a massive DC 200; far higher than the DC 80 listed.

Okay, maybe we're supposed to just multiply the base DC by 5 (despite the annotation on page 91 that says you should apply the 'permanent' factor last). This gives us a DC of 76 (19*5 +20 +11 -50 = 76). What if we add the mitigating factor before multiplying by 5 (ignoring the fact that this messes up the Epic Repulsion calculation). This gives us (19 + 11 + 20 -50)*5 = 0.

In fact, Epic Repulsion is the only spell with the *5 permanent multiplier whose DC seems correct. Are these all misprints or is something else going on?

My guess is that it is not kr that's doing the heavy smoking, but Andy and Bruce. And they got paid for it too. :cool:

Page 89, ELH, Development Is an Art...

If necessary, assess an "ad-hoc" Spellcraft DC adjustment for any effect that cannot be extrapolated from the seeds and factors presented here - the example spells in this chapter use ad hoc factors frequently.

Either it's a mistake or it's ad-hoc, or maybe both.
