You are correct. It is not that important.
However, to some of us, numbers like this just jump out at us as outrageous the moment we read the source material.
Just like the original topic of this thread (which we have side tracked a little), some of us read 1.4 million people in a city and immediately wonder if WotC has a typo.
Later on, we realize that they were being serious (as they are serious on some of the more uber stuff in ELH, which I picked up before gaming last night btw), and we just shake our heads. Different strokes for different folks. To some of us, the more ludicrous stuff is precisely that, ludicrous and potentially requiring house rules. YMMV.
