Ripping apart the ELH...

Another error:

pg 14 under Epic Ranger

"If you like casting spells, think about picking up Epic Spellcasting..."

Technically, a Ranger can qualify for it by taking 5 Improved Spell Capacity Epic feats, and advancing to 45th level so he can have 24 ranks in spellcraft, a cross class skill for Ranger. So, I guess the advice isn't that bad after all.....

I sent the following to penny.williams@wizards.com :

General Errors:
Page 18, Assassin: Uncanny Dodge doesn’t appear to stack with Uncanny Dodge as it did before.
Page 20, Dwarven Defender: Defensive Awareness doesn’t appear to stack with Uncanny Dodge as it did before.
Page 174, Mithral Golem: The value of the mithral golem’s body is 8,500,000 gp, about 100 times the treasure of a standard EL 21 encounter – and roughly 8 times the total wealth of a 21st level character!
Page 174, Adamantine Golem: The value of the adamantine golem’s body is far beyond the expected treasure of an EL 25 encounter.

Format Errors:
Page 176, Demilich: The paragraph starting, “If the demilich is overcome […]” is repeated in the description.
Page 196: Haganemnon: Alignment should read “Always chaotic neutral”.
Page 211, Shadow of the Void: The creature’s subtype should read (Cold, Incorporeal) instead of (Incorporeal, Cold).

Rules Errors:
Page 14, Epic Ranger: The favored enemy text should be changed so the favored enemy bonus comes into effect every 5 levels, matching the table.
Page 28, Divine Emissary: the text conflicts itself: divine inspiration 1/day at 1st level and +1/day at every third level, but the text lists 11th level as one of these levels; the table supports every third level over 11th level. The table doesn’t match the text: bonus feat at 5th level (text) or 6th level (table)?
Page 29, Epic Infiltrator: The text conflicts itself: sneak attack at 1st level and each additional 3, or on levels {1, 5, 8, 11, …}?
Page 29, Epic Infiltrator: Change the class requirements to include the epic feat requirements.
Page 30, Guardian Paramount: Change the class requirements to include the epic feat requirements.
Page 34, Perfect Wight: Change the class requirements to include the epic feat requirements.
Page 36, Union Sentinel: The table doesn’t match the text: portal guardian 1/day or 2/day at 10th level?
Page 37, Exceptional Followers: change “A 6th-level adept or aristocrat would count as a 7th-level follower. A 6th-level fighter or 3rd-level aristocrat/3rd-level wizard would count as an 8th-level follower.” to “A 6th-level adept or aristocrat would count as an 8th-level follower. A 6th-level fighter or 3rd-level aristocrat/3rd-level wizard would count as a 9th-level follower.”
Pages 58-59, Improved Manyshot: Add “plus your epic attack bonus” after “Benefit: As Manyshot, but the number of arrows you can fire is limited only by your base attack bonus”.
Page 59, Spell Slots above 9th level: Change “The number of spell slots available to a deity” to “The number of spell slots available to a character”.
Page 60, Improved Spell Capacity: Remove “You must still have the requisite ability score (10 + spell level) in order to cast any spell in the slot.” (The use of a spell requires a spellcasting attribute of 10 + level, not a spell slot.)
Page 62, Master Staff: Change “you may lose a prepared spell to emulate a wand charge” to “you may lose a prepared spell to emulate a staff charge”.
Page 65, Planar Turning: Last sentence should read “If you can rebuke undead, you rebuke (or command) all evil outsiders and turn (or destroy) all nonevil outsiders.”
Page 133, Unholy Power: “The weapon bestows three negative levels on any evil creatures attempting to wield it” should be “The weapon bestows three negative levels on any good creatures attempting to wield it”.
Page 153, Cup and Talisman of Al’Akbar: “dictum (if evil)” should be “dictum (if chaotic)”.
Page 174, Mithral Golem: The mithral golem requires polymorph any object to convert the iron into mithral, which is beyond the limits of the spell.
Page 174, Adamantine Golem: The adamantine golem requires polymorph any object to convert the iron into adamantine, which is beyond the limits of the spell.
Page 238: Change “Typical Godkissed Party: 1 celebrity (Sor23), 2 hangers-on (Brd15)” to “Typical Godkissed Party (EL 23): 1 celebrity (Sor23), 2 hangers-on (Brd15)”.
Page 246, Typical Regulator Encounter: Change the EL from 25 to 20.
Page 247, Union Sentinel Sergeant: Change CR 2 to CR 23.
Page 254, Union Sentinel: The touch AC and heavy mace damage are incorrect (touch AC 18 (+5 deflection, +3 Dex [Dex 18, limited by an adamantine breastplate]), heavy mace 1d8+13 (+5 Str + 2 Weapon Specialization +4 Epic Weapon Specialization + 2 enhancement).

Hey, ranger's have great spells. They just have really, really slkow progression. I've got a Range rand I'm find ing it difficult to decide on a presitege class becasue of the loss of magical abilities. I'm never going to be as good as the wizard or out cleric, but the utility spells combined with some good thinking makes me very useful.

Edit: And then there are the days thay I have Entanle prepared and we end up going underground to adventure. :D

Does it explicitly state that the Polymorph Any Object spell is what changes it to mithril?

From the PAO spell:

"This spell cannot create material of great intrinsic value, such as copper, silver, gems, silk, gold, and platinum."

Sounds like you have to make it out of mithril first before casting the spell, in which case it would revert back to a pile of mithril and still be extremely valuable.

Either that, or they have another error in that the PAO is explicitly prevented from changing anything to mithril, but they used it for that anyway.

Now, you may be right in that the golem cannot be created from stone and polymorphed into mithril or adamantite as per the flavor text on these golems. Assuming that some special process isn't used in making a golem in the first place. Now, because "Polymorph any Object" cannot create items of intrinsic value, when the golem dies its breaks the spell holding it together. And the golems body reverts back to the stone material that it was originally made of. Add one group of pissed off party members for having to fight a golem of no value.

The golems are probably all right if they had stated the death of the golems would revert them back to broken stone statues. They choose not to add a death mechanic to them and therefor imply that the party members would get the mithril or adamantine.

You will notice that with stronghold guide you can build a wall of a castle out of admantite and it doesn't cost a huge amount. I am not sure that the golem would either. It just those silly weapon and armor that seem to be a pain to make out of it.

The mithral golem first appeared in Dungeon magazine, where the text of the adventure explains that the golem has no treasure but has great value of metal, assuming it can be transported somehow.

Well, its hard to actually figure out how much mithril is worth. A worked item by the dmg is 500 gps/lb. But amazingly a 10 ft x 10 ft x 6 inch thick section of mithril freestanding wall is only worth 2000 gps according to the strongholds book. This brings the question of how much is unworked mithril really worth?

pg 144

Staff of the Rapid Barrage

The Fireball DC should be 23 instead of 19

10 + 6 (heighten) + 7(INT 24 to cast 14th lvl spell)

Back on topic. :)

The example advanced dragon has slots over 9th level to cast with. It also has quicken spell. However, it casts as a sorcerer, making Q-spell worthless and meaning those slots are just extra 9th level slots.

It also has Spell Opportunity and no touch spells worth using for an AoO.
Yeah. I noticed that too. I pencilled in Automatic Quicken Spell (x3) and Multispell (x3) -- now that's nasty -- instead of Spell Opportunity, the 4 Improved Spell Capacity slots, and Improved Darkvision (the range of which is given as 7,600 ft., but this is incorrect; it should only be 3,400 ft. -- and what's the point of doubling 1,700-ft. darkvision anyway...?)
