Rogue: 6 skills or 10?

Actually, no it isn't.

It says "Class Skills: Stealth and Thievery plus four others. From the class skills list below, choose four more trained skills at 1st level."

If we want to nitpick, the second half of the first sentence isn't an enabler at all. The first half of the sentence mandates that Stealth and Thievery are class skills. The second half tells you that you get four more, but gives you no method or means of choosing them, so that half of the sentence is moot without further explanation, which comes in the second sentence.

What he said. The second sentence is merely an elaboration of the 'four others' clause.

And Stealth and Thievery are listed in the Class Skills section so you can pick them up when you multiclass into Rogue. Dollars to donuts you don't get the first level benefits of the classes you multiclass into.

I'm kind of disappointed that one of the Wizard's people didn't show up in this thread and note that they'll fix the crappy wording, like they did with the sneak attack/attacks issue.

It makes me sad that they haven't fired the editing team that worked on the 3rd edition books, and replaced them with... well. Almost anyone qualified.

That's not an argument, that's simply a statement in contradiction with the available facts.

All I can say is the fact that the 1st part is a sentence fragment doesn't prove to me that there aren't 10 skills, and that the word "more" does not meet the definition of "others" in my understanding of the two words.

That would be nice. Or at least a playtester who could clarify the rules we already have.

I think you are probably right on that account.

*Reposts my idea, hoping that not just myself thinks it is*

Even if it is 6 or 10, as I see it your still getting a LOT of bang for your buck.

Since you figure many of those skills are ones that have swallowed old skills:

Athletics (Str): You got Balance, Climb, Jump, Swim all in one.

Thievery (Dex): You got Open Lock, Disable Device, Sleight of Hand.

Also I am hoping that perhaps these skills that have been swallowed are still in the rules but in a different format. As Sub-skills.

Essentially you got your main skill, say Athletics which is strength based, so your Major Skill Modifier is Skill Rank + Ability Modifier.

However when it comes to specific tasks such as Balance, you add in Sub-Skill Modifier (say a Ability Modifier, or Synergy with another Major Skill).

So it becomes for Balance lets say: Major Skill Modifier (Skill Rank + Ability Modifier) + Sub-Skill Modifier (in this case Dex).

So you got all your old Skills more tightly and neatly wrapped, but still all there.

I believe it to be 6 skills. It could have been phrased better so non english majors would understand it while half asleep :-) I believe they were being repetative and that lead to the confusion. Below is why I also think 6 is accurate (they number 6)
"Suggested Skills: Acrobatics, Bluff, Insight, Perception, Stealth, Thievery"
Thanks

I think that the description could be validly interpreted as either 6 or 10. The wording is very vague.

However, the fact that that builds show 6 skills seems to me to be conclusive evidence that the correct number is indeed 6.

For those of you wondering if Intelligence adds to the number of trained skills, I am beginning to think not.

I draw your attention to Races and Classes, Page 67 (those of you who have it). “A rogue with a high Intelligence score gains a flat bonus to all trained skill checks. “

This sentence, in particular, leads me to believe that Intelligence is no longer tied to Skills as intimately as it was in 3.x.
