I am definitely about the role playing. If I wanted to optimize, I would play WoW. DnD for me is about being a hero, battling my way through a great story and building an awesome castle when I'm done with all my phat lewtz!

As i said above, i'm all about ROLEplaying.

When roleplayers gather amongst themselves to play its fine.

When optimizers gather amongst themselves to play its fine.

...but this almost never happens... In almost every group there are those guys who wanna do whatever they can so as to create a superman, and a rather "kitsch" and unrealistic superman at that. They are willing to wear whatever it takes... they are willing to play whatever race it takes... they are willing to combine whichever classes ever published or not, JUST so that they can be super strong...as if their character was an extension of their...well you know what. ROLE playing??? HAH!

And somehow those freakin optimizers always ruin the fun for everybody else who wants to play his good old ROLE playing game... it's a plague if you ask me...

If they want to play among themselves so as to compare their penises... it's fine by me.
Problem is that they REALLY get their kicks when playing in a more normal group... in there they shine among the helpless players... and laugh at those who choose to play the bard for the flavor...

I say we capture them and torture them in a public square somewhere.... so as to make an example of what happens when they mess with NON-optimizers!!!

Honestly, this isn't a "roleplay" vs "rollplay" problem. This is just a problem with a dickish player.

This is the exact same thing as the guy who insists that playing a rogue allows him to backstab and steal from other PCs-- because he's "just playing his role". Or the guy who plays an whiny suboptimal bard alongside other players' optimized PCs-- because it's a "challenging roleplay experience".

This is a social problem, not a gaming preference one.

This is ANOTHER problem, not so irrelevant to what i said, but another problem nonetheless.

I definitely prefer to have roleplaying and dice rolling together, going hand by hand.

But if you force me to choose one of them, I'll go for roleplaying. I may roleplay without rolling dice - in a diceless game or a freeform - and have a lot of fun doing it. I won't have fun from rolling without roleplaying. If there is no real character, nor story, I may as well play a card game or a board game. And I prefer board games with no dice in them, like go or chess.

Generally when you see someone mention "rollplayers" it has nothing to do with the dice...it means powergamers who completely optimize their PCs to take advantage of the game's mechanics. As opposed to "roleplayers" who will pretty much play any character that they think is interesting and fun to play, even if it is weak in game mechanics.

I personally don't generally play weak (in terms of game mechanics) characters. With that said, I also don't need a character that is good at everything or can inflict 10,000 points of damage in a round.
