I don't even use Maps on Beyond because I don't want to have to set up a Campaign.

I just want to pick a Map, pick some PC icons, Pick some Monster Icons, plop 'em all down and move 'em around with a mouse. Give me something that can do THAT and I'm IN.
Can you use encounter builder without setting up campaigns? Encounter builder is sooooo good. I don't ever want to go back to running games without it.

We've completely gotten used to the maps in my school campaign - they also feel pretty indispensable. It's shocking how quickly that became the new normal for games "on the road" for me. At home, it's all about analog terrain and miniatures, so I have mixed feelings about the VTT.

What set up? A Campaign is essentially just a folder for characters and encounters. You click on “Create a Campaign,” give it a name, click on “Create Campaign,” and you’re done. You’re taken to a page where you can launch Maps.

You can even skip giving it a name by clicking on “Create a Premade Campaign,” and selecting any of the options. Again, you’re taken to a page where you can immediately launch Maps, drop a map, drop some tokens, and go.

I don’t think there’s a VTT out there that’s any simpler for dropping a map, some tokens, and playing.

Watching the stream...wow. They are really positive about it. I did not expect that at all.

Edit: Stephen Glicker is shockingly enthusiastic - he loves the minimalist design and immersiveness, finding the basic tools very easy to use. Which is crucial for idiots like me.

Wow - the chat is super toxic. Clarification: mostly just super toxic about WotC.

Yeah, I'm in shock, these guys were getting kinda Doomer-y about D&D lately.

My cynical take is that Glicker's rapid transformation in perspective about the VTT and all-in with the 2024 revision is that he wants to get Battlezoo products on DND Beyond, so he's pandering to the WotC suits.
The stuff he's bragging about - literally, it's been available for close to a decade on Roll20 and for years on Foundry. And he knows this as a developer. The one thing that those services don't have is Hasbro money behind it (and the built-in Beyond fanbase).
So I think it's a calculated move to help his business.
