Ruin Delver’s Fortune

Swift and immediate spells can be made any time even when it's not your turn, right? Could Ruin Delver’s Fortune be used to negate an actual hit? One of its applications is to boost your AC by your Charisma modifier. So if your opponent attacked you and would hit AC 22. If your AC is normally 20 and you have a Charisma modifier of +4, could you cast Ruin Delver's Fortune and negate the hit? Or would you have to cast it before the to-hit roll was rolled and hope your Charisma bonus gives enough of an edge?

To the actual question: No, you have to boost your AC before the attack roll was made, otherwise it has no effect on that attack.

And a sidenote: Only Immediate Actions can be used outside your turn. Swift Actions, like all Free Actions except Immediate Actions, can only be used during your turn.

While I agree with that, I would point that you CAN use it after the attack is declared but before the roll (or I'd even allow it before the result of the roll is known to the player). So if you have a 22 AC and you boost it to a 25 when the attack starts, something that hits a 23 will miss.

The only version of this spell that I know of is the one in the Spell Compendium. None of the options give you an AC boost.

Well... *blush*

That's what I get for posting from work. None-the-less the principle holds. You can cast the spell once you are aware of the action, but not after the actions affect is known....

No worries, given the changes in some of the spells between the original source and the Spell Complendium, it wouldn't have suprised me if there hadn't been a change.

If you already know that you're hit, you're hit - it's too late. But you can cast it when you are attacked (assuming you're using a version that boosts AC) and hope for the best.
