Rules for Rogues using Hide and Sneak

Feint is a standard (or move with Improved Feint) so no multiple attacks a round.

Stormwrack had a PrC with Feint as a swift x/day.

Iirc the Invisible Blade PrC from Complete Warrior grants free action combat feints.


Also why does the OP's rogue think he needs to use magic items to flank. What are his companions doing? Does every PC always fight a different foe? Why don't they gang up on them ?

SRD: "If your Bluff check result exceeds this special Sense Motive check result, your target is denied its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) for the next melee attack you make against it. This attack must be made on or before your next turn."

So, does that mean only the first attack of your attack sequence on your next turn counts or does melee attack refer to your entire attack sequence?

Yes, one attack breaks the Feint and negates future Sneak Attacks.

There is also the possibility of using a distract action to get a hide check. This is another bluff type role. Imp distact gets you a +4 bonus IIRC and makes it a move action.

In the situation you described the rogue should almost always get sneak attack. A long spear wielding rogue is the melee god of mass combat. Unless of course the other side maintains tight formations (i.e. fireball fodder.)

Where is distract from? I don't see Improved Distract (nor a "normal" distract) in the SRD.

Distract is under the Bluff skill. I don't think there is an Imp Distract.

All it does is let you Hide while being observed by Bluffing to distract the opponent (since you distract them, they aren't observing you for a second and you can hide). You must still have something to Hide in/behind handy.

Also, Hide in Plain Sight allows you to Hide while being observed and usually also grants another ability (different classes grant different secondary abilities). For example, the Shadowdancer lets you Hide as long as you are within 10' of a shadow. So you don't actually have to have cover or concealment to Hide. He could indeed Hide standing in featureless plain at noon as long as there are shadows present (from companions or enemies, but not his own shadow).
