D&D 5E Rules Question: Upcasting Into Levels Unknown

Can a 6th level Sorcerer, who only has spell slots up to 3rd level, transform all of their 6 sorcery points into a 4th level spell slot, then upcast something like Magic Missile or Lightning Bolt into it?

Yes, you can, but why?

Maybe if you really need additional target for Fly spell or Banish, maybe.

because when you have that one big fight in the day when you want to lay everything on the table and go full nova, then having the option is useful. More damage, more targets, whatever..... action economy is king, so doing more X with less actions is stronger than not doing that.

This is a really weird class 'feature'. It would enable the sorcerer to exceed the maximum level of their normal spell slots for exactly 3 levels in its advancement - 6th, 7th, and 8th. It may be RAW, but it smacks more of unintended byproduct than intentional design.
