i'm planning to run a homebrew module for my buddies, all long-time D&D players. naturally i wanted to try something new and surprise them. for a while now i wanted to pay a tribute to one of my all-time favourite movies "7 samurai" and run a low-level and low-magic "defend the castle" module. i'm thinking of four 3-4 level characters who with a bunch of other hired adventurers and hirelings and a small army of 1-2 level warriors, experts and commoners are trying to repulse an invasion of different enemies, interested to seize the land of a rich barony. when i started to work on actual plot and crunch on actual numbers i found that i don't have a satisfying idea on how to run large scale battles without it taking lots of time during the game session and/or making it boring for the PCs.
how do you guys do it? thank you in advance!
edit for more info: this will most probably be an E6 module. enemies will be strong enough to overwhelm the baronial army in even fight but weak enough to be wiped out if PCs train the soldiers and implement some good tactics. something along the line of an orcish warband with enslaved goblin tribe, a few trolls and/or some more extic beasts to pepper up the combat. i'm thinking of three phases: skirmishes in the open field, actual castle defense and last stand in the vast dungeons under the castle (there is an old dwarven mithril mine beneath the castle - the source of baron's wealth). after this i'm going to run a "siege/infiltrate the castle". presumable Sons of Gruumsh module, enhanced with large-scale warfare if you guys help me get a handle on it.
