Anyway, just one clarification- you mentioned this was a big bad Iron Golem in Greyhawk. And yet you said it beat Elminster. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Elminster in Faerun?

Maybe he meant Mordenkainen... then again, I doubt very seriously that ANY Iron Golem could beat Mordy or the big "L" in actual diced out combat. Just one of my many problems with "Artistic Liscense" in all the D&D novels.

What if it's an iron golem, but coated with Armor All?

Ironically, I once made a Rust Golem up. It had a attack that blasted rust at the party (reminded me of a Megaman villain). If the rust hit metal, it got a DC to save or was destroyed.

DUDE!!!! You nailed the solution right on the head!

In Magic of Faerun there is a special property that can be bestowed upon magic armor (and weapons I believe) called Everbright. I believe that it makes the item totally impervious to rust and get acid damage reduction as well. No reason why a suitably powerful wizard couldn't put that on a Golem during construction. Of course it would be incredibly shiny as a byproduct of the Everbright.

Everbright - good thinking!

Alternatly, if you didn't want a shiny silver iron golem, it could be treated with Blueshine, same effect of 'no rust here', but it's a deep blue-black color instead. Also from Magic of Faerun.

ACK! Did I say Elminster!?! Don't let Col. Pladoh near this thread! Of course I ment Mordenkainen. And the death actually happened when he entered Maure Castle with Rob Kuntz as DM, go ahead and check the most recent Dungeon Magazine...the forward explains it all. It was one of the earliest D&D campaigns, so who knows what level Mordy was at the time...but the golem took the party not once but twice.

Elminster, sheesh...I should turn in my 1E DMG for that typo.
