S1: The Strange Case of Aif Jenkins' Farm (E13 judge) - Concluded

The mounted orc wheels his mount, but hardly begins his next charge when he is cut down by magic missiles and the thrown mindblade. Juliana then steps forward and cuts down the blinded orc.

[battle over]

The party is standing in the dirt road, presumably not far from Braeholl. They have just been attacked without provocation by 5 orcs, one of whom has left a heavy warhorse on the road. Juliana's light warhorse has been killed (quite dead), and Eusebius' mule has trotted off towards Braeholl, though it has now stopped some 50 feet down the road at a patch of grass. The party estimates it is about half an hour until nightfall.

The road to Braeholl runs South-South-East. Immediately before they were attacked, the party recalls that two figures dashed across the road in front of them from East to West The halflings both noticed that they seemed human and wore red bandanas around their necks. The orc emerged from the west side of the road behind them.

XP award 2:
[sblock] I had meant to assign XPs before this combat with the orcs. I forgot. So I'm assigning them now, retroactively. If you level up (& I believe Eusebius does), please do so immediately, and assume you had done so before the orc combat.

Encounter 1: 4 wargs, two assassins (who escaped): 700 XPs for Juliana & Boog, 840 for Beamer, Banion & Eusebius. Two months time spent (Nov 9, 2006 to Jan 9, 2007), 500 for Juliana & Boog. 400 for B, B & E.

Totals:
1200 XPs for Juliana & Boog
1240 XPs for Banion, Beamer & Eusebius[/sblock]

"Sorry about your horse, Juliana," Beamer says with a pained expression. Beamer would like to search the orc leader and check if he is still alive, but won't if the heavy warhorse is standing over him until someone takes care of the horse.

"We should push on to Braeholl. I don't want to be out here after dark."

OOC: Did the human in front seem to be fleeing?

It would be hard to say why the humans were running across the road.

Searching the fallen orc infantry reveals that each wears a backpack containing a waterskin, 3 days trail rations, a small shovel, small personal effects, and a horn (for signalling or whatever). One carries 50 feet of hemp rope and a grapling hook. None seem to carry cash. They do wear chain main, and have spiked gauntlets and daggers in addition to their main weapons (greataxes).

The party's impression would be that orc raiders should not be here. The network of forts in the Northern Vastermarch are supposed to prevent such incursions of orcs from the Northern Mountains.

As the party has traveled, they have passed numerous small farms, ranches, and orchards.

Juliana shrugs, "Loss is a part of combat. At least it was quick."

Boog discharged his Power harmlessly into the body of the once-blinded orc, the sheen flowing off his body, onto the orc, and then onto the surrounding earth. Boog concealed his disappointment on not finding any lifeforce to absorb to heal his wound.

"Might as well take their stuff", he muttered. "Someone might be willing to pay for that trash."

Is it too late to capture the mounted Orc's horse? Maybe we can come out a little closer to even in the mount category....

After that's resolved one way or the other, Banion will help Boog methodically strip the bodies of anything with potential value. His handy haversack should be helpfull with any extra weight.

"I'll keep an eye out for trouble." While the others are searching, Beamer continues to scan the surroundings, ready to warn the party should anyone else approach.

The group is able to catch and hold the heavy war horse. It's in reasonable shape & can be used. Nothing else happens as a few minutes pass and the group takes the orc equipment.
