Sacred Prostitute preview from BoEF

First of all, this spell is the only raise spell that can be used in combat. All cleric raise spells have at least a 1 minute casting time. Getting to a dead party member's body in 11+ rounds should rarely be a problem. Secondly, the negative energy level penalty is almost meaningless. 100 gps and a Restoration and its gone. Heck, the Restoration isn't even needed for 24 hours; you might as well just say it has a material component of 1,100 gp. The only real penalty is that you lose one of your highest spell slots.

The spell also has the silly feature that your own Charisma actually makes it harder for you to save against it. I can see a bard taking off his Cloak of Charisma before casting it.

Well, this is the "pre-playtesting" preview of the spell, so you can bet that if any of the playtesters brought up the same problems with the spell it will be changed in the final verison due out next month.

But beyond that, if a player in one of my games stopped to try and use this to raise a character killed in combat I'd rain so much death down on that sorcerer/bard from the bad guys it'd hurt the player, too. But, that's just me.

I know this thread is about the Sacred Prostitute , but hopefuly no one will mind if I ask this or point this out...

Why isn't there a normal everyday type of friend or a lifelong friend listed?

As for the Sacred Prostitute, It's got to be like to commoner class/NPC, there’s really no way to incorporate that into your game as a PC.

And if you do try, your character is going to be often "distracted" in what ever you do and where ever you go...

The process to change the d20 STL was begun long before the announcement of the BoEF by the Valar Project

Well, whether it was the cause or the effect, I'm pleased by the development. I have no objection to people playing sexualized versions of RPGs in the privacy of their own home as long as these activities are not associated with the most high profile RPG on the market.

I would only do that if it were in character for the bad guys to know what the spell was, and were willing to take away attention from the engaged combatants. Or do you generally rain death down on characters if they heal, or try to stablize a dying comrade?

One of the things I like about this particular spell is that I can see it as a very poignant and cinematic moment. Risks be damned, I am not about to let my beloved depart.

Of course, I imagine the verbal component to be the entreaty to the departed to return and the pleas to the gods to release the soul. The somatic component is a kiss. Thus, using it as a combat replacement for Raise Dead wouldn't really fit my imagined flavor I suppose. As well, I would probably restrict it's availabilty to certain types of campaigns.

Good question. Why do cohorts get a better bonus than party members, who you've potentially been with since first level, and who have probably saved your life multiple times?

The table is clearly intended to give bonuses based on the amount of love you hold for the subject to be raised. Maybe different types of friend are too difficulult to properly quantify? "No, she really likes my character. I'm a very close friend, not just a 'friend.'" <-- the player of a dead character trying to weasel out bonuses to his save.

The flavor of the spell is that it's tremendously difficult to bring just anybody back from the dead. For it to be certain, your relationship has to be very close. That, I think, is intended to be the limiting factor of the spell (whether or not it turned out that way is debateable). A cleric can bring back anybody. If the prince they were escorting suffers a mishap, the cleric can raise him without a problem. He might qualify only as an acquaintance to the bard/sorcerer with Kiss of Life.

The spell looks like it's intended to duplicate cinematic scenes - like the kiss that restored Neo at the end of The Matrix.

Good Answer, and one that I hadn’t really thought off! :) I personally could see the party member being only a +0 as their are some you just don't like... but on a whole I'm surprised their isn't an just a friend listing... Slightly crude joke from a diseased mind: I guess the caster will get allot of friends with favors now. :D Now back to business it should be apparent threw role-playing that the person is either a friend or just an acceptance.

I also agree that the plus on the cohort should be their, but at the same time the DM guide lets you take a negative on your leadership skill if you've killed cohorts in the past so it is possible to have a cohort that you don't like... I had an idea for a cohort that my character didn't like, but I didn't end up using it. So it's possible to say the least.

Hmm... apparently I'm not authorized to view any of the previews on that website. Most annoying.
Me neither... from work. I think we have a filter to sift out objectionable websites - and the words "sex" and "prostitute" too many times on one page trigger it. Interestingly, it doesn't sift out Nutkinland.
