My wife and I personally think that Firefly is the best sci-fi show out there. We arrange our schedules around it. The creative storytelling in this show beats anything else currently on TV, hands down. The actors are spot-on, and their characters are believable and interesting.

The problem is that FOX put it on a crappy timeslot with little advertising, then pre-empted it midseason for 3 weeks, and they don't have the intellect to figure out why people aren't watching. Perhaps if they moved it to a decent timeslot, they'd get the ratings they are look for.

What truly gets me is that while the future of Firefly hangs in the balance, ho-hum, mediocre Star Trek spinoffs will probably be around long after we are dead, complete with their simplistic, rehashed, predictable plots and uninspired characters.

Star Trek = AOL in space.

(Me bitter? Nah! Well ok, maybe a little.)

I don't deemed all Star Trek as "AOL" but I do deemed ENTERPRISE as a vile turnoff to any longtime devoted Trek fans. The same goes for the latter season of VOYAGER. I place all blame on one person, actually two, but the one person is directly involved: Brannon Braga.

Unfortunately, for every departing old fans, there seems to be two new misguided fans to come and take vacancy.

Yeah. The timeslot issue is a big problem at Fox. They keep cancelling shows that I liked because they were in bad timeslots and didn't get the ratings they wanted.

I don't like that they went so far with the western motif--I think they could have achieved the right effect without making it so stylized, but I still like the show. Good premise and good production valuse, which is alot for a network sci-fi show.

I think it's kinda funny that Star Trek actually started off in a similar way. TOS was very much a "western in space." Kirk did a ton of shooting from the hip, womanizing and the like. Very much like the traditional American Old West. He was a cowboy. The franchise has changed dramatically since then but the similarities are there.

Both have done the "western" feel in different ways. Firefly is more visual and vocal (in the way the characters speak) about it but TOS had the attitude. Eh, just a thought. ;)

If you want to save a show, write a real, physical letter. Sign it by hand, and mail it. On-line petitions have a poor track record, probably because they're too bloody easy to sign. If it takes little effort to do, it demonstrates little dedication to the show.

1) People keep saying this is a bad time slot for the show. The thing is, there isn't a better time slot for it, and prior sci-fi oriented shows HAVE done well in that exact same time slot. Go ahead, try and play the time slot game. You will be amazed at how seriously jammed the schedule for prime time is right now.

2) The show is not currently slated for cancellation, as far as anyone can report. I agree we should show support for programs we like, and I encourage everyone to sign the petition if they like the show (or think it has potential). But as far as I can tell, it hasn't been cancelled, and is actually doing slightly better than some other shows that also have not been cancelled in prior years.

I do have to voice my vote that it is a show well worth watching. While it had a slow start, I highly advise anyone who tried the first few episodes and left it to try it again. The last three episodes have been absolutely flabbergastingly good.

If you even remotely like the other two Whedon-inspired shows, pick this up. NOW! If you don't like Buffy or Angel, it's still worth a try, because I personally can't think of a TV show that's been scripted this well in 6 years.

That's not exactly right. Could you name 3 that did well on Fridays?

Well, and now I am sad to report I am very wrong.

I just read in today's USA TODAY that Firefly was cancelled.

So sad.

As for that time slot having done okay in the past, it did just find for x-files. Name three? Come on now, other than thursday 8-10, it would be hard to name three shows in ANY time slot that did well. I was just saying that it had done fine for sci-fi in the past (x-files), meaning the slot was not as hopeless as people thought.

Then again, now that Firefly is cancelled, I may very well have been wrong.

Shows just cancelled: Birds of Prey (WB), Bram and Alice (CBS), Firefly (Fox), Girls Club (Fox), Haunted (UPN), That Was Then (ABC), Push, Nevada (ABC), Robbery Homicide Division (CBS).
