So...looking for sidequests? I can think of a million different variations. Pickpockets, various factions seeking to involve or use the PCs in their personal vendettas, imperious priestesses demanding bribes, samples, or personal services, foul play by other merchants who are worried about competition, drow mages or alchemists seeking test subjects for their newest spell or poison, assassination attempts not directly aimed at or involving the PCs (but possibly close enough to cause collateral damage), struggles for domination or apparent favor from the public, slave dealers looking for "merchandise" with rare skills, tolls or licensing that is inconsistent between authority figures, escaped demons / constructs / monstrous minions, magic spells or items that go awry, callous cruelties that might tempt the good-aligned to intervene...

Upon reflection, I think I may have been too hasty. A slave revolt that fails is certainly going to create a huge amount of chaos, and with the chaos, opportunities for the PCs to make a quick profit while the city guards are busy winning the revolt. They might even do some good, but let's not get crazy about the odds.

Yeah. Slave rebellions rarely succeed and it would be especially long odds against the drow. Agreed.

I was thinking of double cross events where the PCs are in trouble and get 'rescues' by another group, who is secretly part of the same group. They try to set up the PCs to do another mission that needs doing with the PCs as the patsy.
Some depends on the city and if it is more tolerant of outsiders or if all visitors are escorted as slaves or near slaves. The PCs may need to have some leeway to move about.

Funny that I just saw this, I had googled "drow scenario" and it popped up.
Lost Mine of Phandelver....I'm expanding on the Black Spider and adding a small drow enclave in a lower level. I don't want it to be huge like a whole drow city, more like an outpost that has a vested interest in the Forge of Spells. I'm going to put a permanent portal not far from the mine level that links to the outpost.
However, i haven't figured out the link between the drow at the outpost and Nezznar (who is actually like a drider mage but no one else knows that).
Any suggestions of how this could play out and/or motivations between Nezznar and the other drow? I will read the thread again, there were several good ideas embedded there. I might have access to that old 4e module, I will have to check.

So I fell in love with the Drow when the G & D series initially came out in 1979 (or maybe 1980), but I've never really gotten a good scenario outof them. I purchased Oones Drow City maps (For VTT, yiu cannot beat Oones for quality and price-friendly)

I have just about every scenario made for the Drow, which is not as many as you would think.
Now, what I am looking at is a take off of Drow Rising, in which the PCs travel to a Drow City to stop surface raids via assassination.
That's a good core plot.
The PCs will be high level (how high, I don't know, because they's about 12-15 sessions away), have no Drow PCs, and will have devices that hide their true alignments as CN. They will be masquerading as merchants, trades, or some such; their cover will be up to the players.
But they should have to spend some time in the Drow city, and there I am coming up with a blank. Being CE, Drow law enforcement should be inefficient, indifferent, and corrupt, except when it comes to keeping tabs on slaves or slave rebellions.
The city should be ripe for sidebar quests, but I can't think of a single one, and so far I haven't found a commercial scenario with much guidance.
Anyone run this sort of thing, or seen a good module to help?
Check out the 2e Menzoberranzan boxed set. I think the plot there might also be of use to your idea.
There was a very good 6 books novel or so war of the drow?/spider?, a homage to Salvatore by different authors if I remember correctly atm. It featured much more realistic "good" drow than drizzt and had many scenes which you could borrow. Also the dorw city in the BG2 CRPG was done quite well imo.
Paizo's (3.5 edition) adventure Endless Night is set in a Drow city. (Part 4 of the Second Darkness adventure path.)
The PCs tasks are mostly very campaign specific, but did include:
*a drider hunt; however I'm not sure how that would fit in 5e - I seem to remember D&D drider lore was changed at some point
*to clean up the results of debauchery that went too far
*an assassination request (as in this case they make perfect minions because they will be leaving the city almost immediately afterwards).
