School shootings in Montreal

I'm in Montreal at the moment and have been listening to the news reports on the radio for the past few hours. Its unreal, especially considering that a similar scenario played itself out over a decade ago in another university in this city. BTW Dawson is a college, not a university. Specifically it's a cegep, if anyone knows what that is.

The reports are currently all unconfirmed but so far it seems that there are at least two deaths, 8 people with critical injuries and 5 with very serious injuries. It's unclear how many gunmen there are; early reports said it was somewhere between two and four, though it now appears that it's only one and he's been taken down by police finally. Early reports say that he was a male goth with a mohawk, dressed in a black trench coat and wielding a rifle of some sort.

There are currently SWAT teams making their way through the building (it's huge) and they're searching for other possible suspects and students and teachers that have been in hiding for hours.

I heard the shooter killed himself, unconfirmed.

edit: Nope. Looks like the police shot him dead.

Yep, I'm familiar with CEGEPs.....the news report I saw mentioned university. I actually graduated from John Abbott CEGEP before leaving the province.

Latest CBC report says 20 people have been shot, 8 critical, several others in lesser stages. But the last article I read seemed to say the police aren't talking about the status of 4 victims. I'm hoping that's just a rumour, and not a sign that there have been deaths.

From what I understand two of the gunmen are dead....one shot himself, and the other was "neutralized" by police.

People around the office have been talking about this being shades of the Polytechnic shooting by Marc Lepine all afternoon.

Pretty horrible...:(

Canadian Newsnet is only talking about one shooter. Where did you hear about a second? Possible it was just an unruly panicking student?

wow, that's messed up - in canada even...

Our violent crime rates are much lower than in the U.S., but stuff still happens here...

There was the shooting in Alberta the same year as Columbine, but only one student died.

Montreal's had it rough, with a teacher at Concordia killing 4 people several years ago, and then the Polytechnic massacre in 89, where Marc Lepine killed 14 women at the college. I think he shot 27 or something. That shooting was one of the big reasons the government introduced the gun registry.

The Dawson incident has been on the news all night. It sounds like the talk of 2-3 other gunners might have simply been because of panic. I think they've finally acknowledged that 12 people were shot, 8 are in critical condition, one of whom died, and the there were another 8 people who were injured when they were trampled in the panic to escape the school, or fell running away, etc.

It's odd, because Montreal's not really a very violent city. I think Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa all have higher violent crime rates.

Vancouver recently had a dude running around stabbing homeless people every day. They eventually busted him.

Otherwise people in Vancouver are too stoned to commit crimes.

This morning they mentioned that the shooter had pictures of himself with guns on a vampire related website. He had a comment about how bad life sucked, goth and metal kicked a**. No other info that I heard yet.
