A Warrior's Poem
By Orion Cooper
When I was a young lad
My father sat me on his knee
He told me the about everything
And said these words to me
“Son you have to work hard
And do what is right.”
But I never thought in my life
I’d have to learn to fight
I was handed a sword
And a shield in other hand
We were raided by humanoids
From a strange distant land
My brother lost his legs
My mother and father died
When the battle was over
I fell down and cried
I never even got a chance
To take up my fathers trade
All the lands we farmed were ruined
Gone were the plans we laid
Fate didn’t even give me a choice
To continue with my life
I had wanted three children
And a comely wife
But now all of that is gone
Traded for a sword and shield
I would give it all away
Just to toil on my field
I sleep on the road
In rain snow and sleet
My heart burns with hatred
Weary are my feet
The only thing pushing me on
Is the prospect of revenge
Rest father and mother
Your deaths I will avenge
I track them day and night
I track them through the snow
I track them without sound
So they never know
They never see me coming
I attack with surprise
Their sentries are destroyed
Silenced are their cries
When all is done
None are left that survive
My heart burns with purpose
But my soul is not alive
Each one that my sword cleaves
Cleaves in to my soul
My body may be fit
By my psyche isn’t whole
The peasants stare at me
With strange fear in their eyes
They part paths for me
And spread uncouth lies
In their eyes I’m a monster
A child turned devil man
This blood sword at my side
Scared them all and they ran
Age finally catches to me
My body is weak and cracked
There is no wife at my side
And my heart is racked
These pains I carry inside
Started many years ago
Like my father before me
It is my time to go
When I was a young lad
My father sat me on his knee
He told me the about everything
And said these words to me
“Son you have to work hard
And do what is right.”
But I never thought in my life
