Well, that's one way to start the campaign ...

All of the characters are bards, or members of a travelling band/troupe of performers (wouldn't necessarily have to be bards).

A friend told me about a game he played in once.

The DM had put together a grim'n'gritty style campaign. He told the players to put together a band of mercenaries.

They all rolled up bards.

"We're a band," they informed the aghast DM. "The Mercenaries."
