Absolutely. At the arcane library, you can download the quickstart rules or something like that for free. They will get you to 3rd lvl, if memory serves. Is there a way to preview the game?
I've seen it suggested in other threads.

From what I can see of it this is very true - I’ve been looking at Shadowdark to do some different fantasy stuff, maybe more JRPG or manga/manhwa style dungeon fantasy*, and I really like the new classes in the Lost Repertoire, especially the Runebearer and the Virtuoso, which are fun different takes on the fighter and the bard (or maybe the wizard) respectively. Tone and even lethality is a matter of setting and agreed assumptions at the table.Shadowdark is so rules-light in the best ways that I find it hugely simple to "hack", not just for different settings, but for different "moods" or levels of lethality.
Which is why I find it odd when I get pushback from people who insist that the game was designed to be ultra lethal and any other playstyle is incompatible. To each their own, and maybe that was the intention (ie, PCs dying regularly), but from the 2 albeit short-lived campaigns that I actually ran, we had a fine time with some homebrewed dials set to "easy" mode.

I've looked through the free preview.
Overall, it is very to understand.
How different (if at all) is the full version of the game from the free preview?
It's a huge amount of the game. It's only missing higher level spells and monsters. You could go up a few levels with this to find out if you like the game or not.I've looked through the free preview.
