shield other spell and damage reduction

What happens if two npc's or pc's have damage reduction and have cast shield other on each other? If they each had damage reduction of 10 they could get rid of 20 points of damage without taking any, right?
But how many times can they pass it back and forth?
50 damage done to subject one...
Subject one has DR 10...takes 40 damage, splits it. He loses 20 hp's and sends 20 to his partner. His partner splits it, taking none because of his 10 DR and sends the other 10 back to his partner. Is this a new source now? A new attack? Does his DR apply again? If so it effectively means 50 damage was reduced to 20.
On a sorta related note. Has anyone ever done this in their campaign? I think I'd name npc's using this, Tomax and Xamot.

The damage is being magically transfered to you. I would also liken it to willing lowering saves or SR. So I would say DR would count for the person struck, but not the overly generous person who is having the damage transfered to him.

So your example above would be,

#1 hit for 50 points.

His DR reduces this to 40.

He takes 20 points.

#2 takes 20 points.

If you wanted to be generous, and let the DR for #2 count, #1 would still take 20, #2 would take 10. But there would be no "bouncing" in any case.
