Just a thought, but given they are still legal & from a PHB, but not in the 2024 PHB, should they s

You're the one who said that if there wasn't a mechanic for something then it didn't exist in the game. No half-elf mechanics means there are no half-elves. I understood that statement quite well. If you want to walk back that claim, go right ahead.
There's nothing to walk back as I never said the bolded part. There's no mechanic for grass, and it exists in the game. Races, though, need unique mechanics to back up their narratives. Putting lipstick on a pig(elf or human) does not make the pig a half-elf.

It’s so fun watching people try to justify forcing their preferences on others by claiming the speak for all these “many” people.
I'm not speaking for anyone else. Pointing out facts isn't speaking for anyone and it's a fact that many tables play that way. I'm also not forcing or even trying to force my way on anyone else.

The term "5.5" is unofficial and not even widely accepted among the fanbase.

2024 PHB literally is 5e − literally 5.0.
A squirrel does not become a possum just because the possum owner calls it a squirrel. It doesn't matter what the 5.5e PHB says, it's not 5e as it changes far too much of the game for it to be.

My dude. I already - to correctly use the word 'literally' - posted the LITERAL text from the 2024 PHB page 5. The first sentence LITERALLY says "This is the 2024 version of the fifth edition Player's Handbook."

That is - again, to use your term, - literally saying it is Fifth edition, a new version but still FIFTH EDITION.
Would you believe WotC if the sentence had instead read, "This book is a frog."? Just because they wrote something doesn't make it the truth. Far too much has been changed for it to be 5e.

At the same time. The absence of the Half Elf mechanics is a difference in setting. It would be incorrect to mischaracterize it as a difference in edition.
No, it is not a difference in setting. The PHB is not a setting, it's rules that may or many not be included in a setting, or may be modified by a setting. The lack of half-elves in the 5.5e PHB means that they are not in the current incarnation of the game(assuming they aren't in the DMG).

Did they not put the rules for creating hybrid species in the phb?
The infamous sidebar did not make it to the PHB.

WotC said somewhere in the correspondence that they were working on a new idea. The sidebar was dropped and currently nothing replaces it. Most people assumed a hybrid system would be in the PHB (or DMG) but it appears it will be further off.

Sure. Anyway, is Half-Elf in the 2024 "5.5e" PHB? I believe the answer is no, because it was removed from the new edition/errata/revision/version/decade update.

It's with the necromancer, transmuter, enchanter, conjurer, nature priest, tempest priest, death priest, knowledge priest and oathbreaker in the "demoted from the PHB" table.
