Should 3.x Have its own General Forum?

So, why don't we have a 1e and 2e general board, since Enworld polls show we have a big following of 1e/2e around here.

Because 1e and 2e are joined into 3.x, because there are so few players of those systems and their edition wars are long over. There's no pressing need to separate them.

The D&D community is split, with some jingoism and some hard feelings on both sides, at least in some quarters.

Segregating people based on preferred edition will only make matters worse, not better.

What's more there is too much overlap so that a good bit of legitimate discussion may never really get discussed because it would not fit neatly into one cubby-hole or another.

One thing I've learned is that "ghetto" doesn't apply online. Ghettos arise because of setting people of a perceived lower class into an area confined within a city. This creates racial tensions (as the races are often segregated into separate grottoes) and they stew in their circumstances, not to mention that drug dealers and gangs prey on the poor.

None of those conditions exist on a forum, as economics and the sensitive racial issues do not apply.

Just because WOTC has done nothing to resolve the edition wars issue does not mean that having separate forums will fuel the flames. In another thread, the 3.x players were saying that they were in fear of being edged out of Enworld. A 3.x General forum would remove that fear and show that they do indeed have a place at Enworld. They could still post in the main General forum as long as they keep their negative comments regarding editions in their own 3.x General forum.

And logically (reductio ad absurdum) if 4e and 3x get seperate forums, so should Exalted, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Dying Earth, Esoterrorists, Call of Cthulthu, C&C, Mutants and Masterminds, Runequest, Conan, Iron Heroes, Arcana Unearthed etc. That obviously is not a good or workable idea.

So why just 4e and 3x? Because there is some friction there? Because 4e and 3x players are incapable of inhabiting the same forum? I see no evidence of that to such a degree as might warrant DMZs to seperate the sides.

Seperate 4e and 3x forums is a very bad idea all the way around.

Enworld does not support those other games. Enworld was created to support D&D and d20.

Hi Corjay
I agree. I think a separate 3.x General would go a long way in mitigating all the strife around here. Perhaps later (about 6 months to a year) the viability of separate General Forums could be re-evaluated for the possibility of recombining them.

No Ghettos implied by the suggestion of a space where one can post without being derided as second class because of not changing systems (yet).

General is general. Sure, mention of various systems and editions may creep in, but by and large the purpose of the General RPD Discussion forum is (as far as I understand) to have general RPG discussions, regardless of system, edition, gender, national origin, race, or sexual orientation of the rule books being used.

If a topic is skewed to the rules of one particular system, there are already different boards for that. Therefore, I, personally, don't see a need for a seperate General RPG forum for each of the aforementioned editions.

Well, if you go by the original meaning, ghetto fits quite well. Since it was places where people of the same race, ethnicity or culture were placed and/or forced to live, there was no racial tensions.

That's a modern phenomenon.

My personal desire would be that posters

1) Use the Tags that we provided for them - people can tag a new thread any way they want now!

2) Start making constructive threads for the editions they want to play and not decide it's fun to take drive-by potshots at other threads that have topics they wouldn't normally visit

Just those two modicums of self-restraint would work wonders for the whole board. The mods try to catch people pot-shotting and threadcrapping as much as possible, but being human they can't be everywhere at once, and things slip through. Quite frankly, the simple act of holding one's tongue must be a Herculean task for some people.
