Okay..
Spell Focus (Divination) would be a waste of a feat since most Divination spells DO NOT affect a target other than the caster themselves so there isn't really a reason for the DC for Divination spells to be raised.
I am playing a Soul Mech Abjurer in a Dragonstar PBP game at my forums and you know what? I have Spell Focus (Evocation) and Greater Spell Focus (Evocation) as feats. Why? Taking Spell Focus (Abjuration) would simply be a waste of a feat because Abjurations affect you and your party and not enemies. That character will still need to deal damage to enemies as well as being able to protect himself and his allies. I would probably take spell focus for EVER school my character had access to because generally, a wizard is going to want to make ALL the spells he or she knows more potent against a foe and not just for one school of magic, no matter how specialized they are.
My advice, lay off the player and let him develop his own character the way HE sees fit. If he is playing the part, then I don't really see why you would need to force him to change his character. Please note the his part of that sentence.
