Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

I'm pretty sure they want rituals to generally be the means of last resort. Try mundane solutions first and if those don't work then use the rituals. The cost is an enticement issue to try other things first and to spread out the ability to handle situations to the entire party. This will probably be more important the more rituals are published.

My guess/hope is that each roll carries a penalty for failure, but I can't find anything supporting that view.

That's because the game doesn't work like that (which is overall a very good thing). In fact it encourages the DM to give the PCs a success if they have plenty of time to work on a skill-related thing. So the basic effect of taking 20 is still there.

Hired a skilled, educated translator to follow you around or Comprehend Languages?

My Wizard spent 2 feats (my wife is running 3 of us thru Heathen so we're level 8) on Linguist so he can't speak 2 languages in the game...Supernal and whatever one ya use for Elementals. It isn't hard to get languages covered.

I don't have an issue w/the rituals having a component cost. This will likely end up ignored like wizards having to buy their spell components. I plan on being able to cast each of my rituals 3 times and having each of the other 2 players cough up 2/3 of the cash. Raise Dead x3 is worth the money. Unless I'm the one who dies ;)

If you have a Warlock or Rogue there is a good chance of a Thievery skill (which opens locks). Skill training and Sneak of Shadows both allow you to pick up Thievery too. If no one in the party has Thievery tho, Knock will be handy

Exactly how it should be. Knock shouldn't be useful when you have someone with Thievery, because then a ritual is overshadowing part of another character's niche.

There is a reason to use it: no one in the party can open locks.

You could kick any door in existence down faster and cheaper than using a ritual. I am not sure it is still useful at that point. It is not like a ritual is the stealthy option.
