I need to make a quick rant here so bare with me please.

Yesterday I was outside the commissary when the National Anthem began playing. I stopped loading my groceries, came to attention and put my hand over my heart (I was not in uniform or I would have saluted). I noticed some contractors across the parking lot talking and laughing outside their truck. When the anthem was done I walked over to them and politely asked them why they werent at attention for the National Anthem. I was told to "relax" and that is was "no big deal". I told them that they were guests on a Military installation and that they should follow our rules and customs. One of them responded: "I did my time and now I don't have to respect anything I don't want to." I told him that while on base, it is the law that you must stop and be at attention during the National Antem even if you are not military. He told me not to be an "Uptight Bitch" and got into his truck.

Where the HELL has all the respect in the world gone? I mean WTF people. I see this every day. People keep driving, pretending the dont hear it when its loud enough to wake the dead. Is it too much to ask that you take 1 minute out of your day and show a little respect for the country you live in?

I know entirely what you mean ... I see this time and again with people with a wide variety of subjects, not just the country.

Hmm ... for me this is a tough question to answer in the forums without crossing over the lines. :\

I might not like everything about the way our country is currently run, but I have a lot of respect for the ideals it was founded upon. That makes me proud enough to be at attention whenever I hear the national anthem.

I think the problem for most people is not that it's gone, but rather that it was never instilled into our minds/hearts. Yeah, we have history class, but that doesn't really do much about patriotism.

Really, the only patriotic thing I've ever had to do was say the Pledge of Allegiance in like grade school. Never taught the National Anthem or anything.

I greatly respect the country in which I live (the US). I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
I respect the people who have died to make it the way it is, and the minds and history
which came together to form it.

The National Anthem, the pledge of Alliegance, and the flag, however, I have zero respect for. It's all worthless symbol worship which allows people to mouth belief without any corresponding actions. Not to mention the fact that they're all terribly diluted tools of propaganda on both sides of the aisle.

Count me in on liking America as it is.
Count me out on rose-colored nationalism.

simpily put..... the world is going to hell and I honestly believe within my lifetime I will witness an uprising or outright civil war within the US again. Its all about me me me not us us us. (us as many people not US as United States).

Our main educators and moral compass consists of Madonna, Britney and Usher with some Eniem to round the mess out.

'nuff said. I have said too much....

He told me not to be an "Uptight Bitch" and got into his truck.
Know what? I'm more troubled by that than by the fact that he didn't attend to the Anthem.

Disclaimer: I'm being sincere, don't take it as sarcasm.

I completely understand your feelings Goldmoon.

However, I'm going to have to close this thread because it is already in fairly political waters and past experience teaches that it is likely to end up going downhill fast.

Regards
