Silly thought on Monks

Why not give Monks their choice of Ranger or Paladin spellcasting? you'd need to tweak the spell lists a bit... but either one fits a certain monk path very nicely. A weapon wielding monk would be better off taking the paladin path, and a fist fighting monk would be better off taking the rangers path (I believe at first blush anyway)... but in either case those spell lists synergize nicely with what the Monk offers.

There are a few feats in the Eberron Campaign Setting rulebook that make a weapon a monk weapon (allowing it for use in conjunction with flurry of blows)
The three weapons are: Double-Bladed Sword, Longspear, and Longsword
each of them require proficiency, and weapon focus

The Monk should've been proficient with spears, polearms & swords from the get go.

Yeah, sorta...

This was my take on it.

Proficient in all simple weapons, PLUS choose one of the following groups as the PC's Melee Martial Arts Weapons and additional Ranged weapons:

1) 1 One-handed and 2 Light Martial weapons + 1 Martial Ranged Weapon
2) 3 Exotic Light weapons + 1 Martial or Exotic Ranged Weapon
3) 1 Exotic Light Weapon + 1 Exotic One-handed weapon + 1 Martial Ranged Weapon
4) 1 Martial or Exotic 2 handed weapon + 1 Martial or Exotic Ranged Weapon
5) Any 5 Simple weapons +1 Martial or Exotic Ranged weapon

These Melee Martial arts weapons may be used with Flurry of Blows

This would let you simulate a broad variety of martial arts schools.

That sounds like a good idea, although it still wouldn't solve the sheer scope of problems the monk class has to cope with. If you find ways to make its class features more synergetic, and the chassis less Huh? and MAD at the same time, I'm game.

As for spellcasting...I'm divided.

On the one hand, there is already thë monk-like OA Shaman that has full casting. In some ways, I could see that as a basis for a revised Monk. OTOH, in some ways it's not all that different from allergic who takes IUS and just doesn't wear much armor.

Something I've thought about was just giving Monks Domains & the associated spells only.. And light armor only.

Form of Many Dragons: For each point of wisdom the monk possesses he may continuously maintain any prepared spell he casts upon himself, his attendant gear or a creature linked to him through a special bond, such as an Animal Companion or a Familiar. If the monk becomes unconsciousness, he loses the benefit of this class feature.

So how do you make an unarmed combat specialist core class that has some flavour but is not necessarily Oriental and does not suck? That is the question... :hmm:
