Considering the items nature, I had just assumed they had been plated or lined with gold leaf (and that the apple was likely paper mache or lead-cored.

Incedentally, the schmooze of my group sold the items for a few hundred gold pieces to some gullible traders visiting Saltmarsh. He was very pleased with himself...
