Well, the Goonies didn’t come out of nowhere. It has significantly older antecedents, such as the Famous Five and The Story of the Treasure Seakers.
"Kids on bikes" has been a genre, unto itself, for many decades. You could even consider stuff like "Encyclopedia Brown" to be kids on bikes stories. Hell, one of my friends just published his own "kids on bikes" novel, set in the 1980s. There's a RPG by that name. "Stranger Things" might be the peak of the genre. Amazon did a time travel series called "Paper Girls" in the same vein, that was quite good.

The thing about Skeleton Crew for me is that if this show was done back in the 80s, or was done as a movie, it would be it's own thing. It's own universe. It wouldn't be stuck into the Star Wars Universe. Studios are just afraid now to let things stand on their own, and they think by putting on an existing label or brand on it, it can get the extra juice. The problem is that sometimes these things feel shoe-horned to me, whereas they wouldn't be if they lived on their own terms.

I'm pretty sure children on bicycles feature in E. Nesbit's works, late 19th - early 20th century, and so are probably the earliest examples of the genre.

Yes, I am not sure how much sense this makes in the Star Wars universe. But the trailer certainly makes it look good.

Or, maybe, they're expanding on the Star Wars brand so it isn't tied solely to the Skywalker saga. I, for one, am very much looking forward to this. It doesn't look to me like it's going to be shoe-horned at all.

World building is an elaborate affair, and can get in the way of the storytelling if you keep having to stop to explain how something works. If you have a pre-made world to put your story in, why reinvent the wheel?

On the other hand, burning the whole thing down and scratchbuilding a new science fantasy universe might be the only way to deal with Star Wars' toxic fans.
