Skilled?! NO. ... Check your PCs' resumes!

Driddle

First Post
We've had a serious rash of falsified player character resumes lately, as they've been found to have spent skill points on forbidden "trained only" skills with the belief that those specialties are merely "cross-class" that anyone can buy into at two points each.

This issue has led to some very embarassing turnovers and at least one dismissal from the campaign. A party leader was asked to resign his position after pretending to be skilled in at least two (documented) professions and promising to disable and open a lock on a very valuable plot device. Even more seriously, another character inadvertantly killed a little girl NPC after losing control of his mount, ala a fake handle animal skill.

Areas of concern: decipher script, disable device, handle animal, knowledge (any!), open lock, profession (any!), sleight of hand, spellcraft, tumble and use magic device. Any time you see a PC claim competence in those areas, you should confirm the degree program immediately.

Assuming you're playing 3.0.

in 3.5e there are no prehibited skills, you can take anything as a cross-class

And thank God for that, they was a stupid idea in the first place. Almost as bad as posthibited skills (which were just plain useless).

Personally, I assume the PCs are lying about their credentials and subtract 10 from any announced result as a matter of course. I had to do this after I learned that the Paladin had an honorary degree in Use Magic Device, which had been, apparently, granted by the Rogue of the group. But, the Rogue wasn't even an accredited University, so the matter was simply resolved by having Blue Lightning do 100d6 damage to the both of them, killing them both off. The new characters they created were a pair of Thunder Twin Half-Illithids with the "Abberant Tentacles of 20' reach" feat. They gave me a letter from the Dean, but it's suspiciously in the Cleric's handwriting... More news as it develops.

(sigh) I pity your junior college view of the world.

In the Ivy League gaming circles, we still respect certain ... shall we say, "pedigreed?" ... areas of study.

My biggest problem is with gamers who think they are D&D players but in actuality are role players. I hate when that happens.

Do you not realize how condescending this sounds? With so many posts under your belt, I'm shocked at your posting etiquette. I'm simply going to have to assume you're a masked saboteur and the real Driddle is tied up in a basement somewhere, anguished cries of "No, no, please don't make threads and then belittle people who contribute" muffled behind an ersatz gag.
