[Slightly OT] What to do if you're invited into a group?

Didn't Phillip K. Dick originally write that? :)

Uhm not quite. :) Btw Alisho, Philip K Dick is one of the best sci-fi writers ever. (At least in my opinion.) He wrote the book on which the movie "Blade Runner" was based on and a short story on which "Total Recall" was based on as well. Plus a few others.

go find a book about the US losing WWII. ;)

Clay, you really must read Philip K. Dick.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Bladerunner)
Minority Report
A scanner Darkly
The Man in the High Castle
Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said

and a host of others!

Wait Nightfall, aren't you in West Virginia? First thing, make sure the adventure isn't called Snipe Hunting. =)

Seriously, I agree with all of the advice of Play First, Subvert Later that the others have posted. It'll let you get a feel for what the group likes and pros and cons of the situation. I know you've been looking for a good face-to-face gaming group, so I hope it works out.

Understand folks, what little I do know comes from only one source, (the one who invited me) who also feels like he wants to start a new group (a few of the present players are less than serious and apparently the DM isn't doing much to handle the situation) Now I don't want to rock the book...but on the other hand my SL instincts are kicking...So should I just play it cool, or go hardcore and take over?

I'd say just tell the person who invited you that you enjoy playing, but have a preference for DM'ing. That way, they have your resume on file when a job opening matches your qualifications. (:

OTOH, Find out first if you'd like to DM this group! If you find out you don't want to play or DM them, no point making an offer.

Have fun!

Ruined,

I had that same thought just a few days ago. But it's not like I got directions, or anything. Supposedly they'll pick me up. If not, well then I get to sit at home and watch a Charlie Brown Christmas with the folks. ;) I appreciate the advice Ruined.

ced,

I think I'll hold off mainly for the second reason. I don't know these guys.

This summer I joined an officemate's group, after being out of roleplaying for about (counts on fingers, runs out of fingers, takes off shoes...) a long time. Everyone in the already large group welcomed me, helped me get up to speed on 3rd ed (and D&D, as I had played... another... system in my youth) helped me make a character, and happily role played my character into their ongoing campaign. Four months later I'm pretty much a regular in the group, and have started my own on alternate weeks.

It was definitely the welcoming attutides players in the group that got me back into role playing and made it enjoyable, and became good friends in the process (not to mention introducing me to this forum).
