[Slightly OT] What to do if you're invited into a group?

Start of by explaining to them in depth how they are going about everything all wrong. Refer to them as simpletons and go to great lengths to explain just how much smarter you really are. Write a prepared lecture, people you have never met love to be lectured in depth on the subject of how they are wrong and you are right. Don't forget to dig thourgh the refrigerator and help yourself, but make sure you gripe about how they don't have any of the stuff you like. People love it when you wonder around their house commenting on how they really need to do a better job cleaning, don't forget to check in the closets and under the bed. Give them all pet names, like guy with the goofy haircut or stupid boy or hey you, it makes them feel more at home and comfortable around you. And most important, before you leave make sure to start a fire somewhere in the house, as a sign of respect.

Oh sorry I'm having flashbacks to some of the people that have been invited to gaming groups that I've been in. (Ok so nobody ever brought a written lecture, they just memorized it.)

In all seriousness just remember that they are wondering about you as much as you are wondering about them, the first time there is mainly to get to know the other people, don't worry about how the game is run just see if you can click with the people.

Since they are picking you up, make sure you're prepared with pepper spray or a nice long knife (preferrably on that you know how to use) just in case the guy who invited you turns out to be the Ted Bundy type. I would also have them pick you up from a known location in town rather than letting them know where you live.

Once there, figure out who knows how to play well and who doesn't really have a clue. Then start sowing the seeds of discord and distrust. Challenge the DM on every rule that he gets wrong, and if he made the adventure, point out all of the obvious plot holes or points where its obvious there's a lack of preparation. If they're playing the Forgotten Realms, make sure to point out how lame a setting it is, and tell them what they're missing in the Scarred Lands. In a few game sessions you'll be able to nuke their group and take the quality players back to your home game.

OK, I'm serious about the first part, but not about the second, though I have seen it done before. Well, maybe not about the knife. That's your call since it would technically be a concealed weapon. I once had a guy in the army reserves and a wannabe police officer in my group. They brought loaded guns to the game. LOADED GUNS!!!! One of these guys had even shot himself in the leg once while holstering his weapon. Fortunately there were never any incidents, but I never liked it when they would whip out heir pistols and compare.

Well Darrin, thanks for the concern. I think I'll definately just choose a public location. As for the other stuff...well I'll just rely on my natural animal instincts and a heavy bookbag for self defense. ;)

Well I didn't get shot, I didn't get mugged or assaulted (my character did, but that's a long story), but I'm happy to report, I'm fine, and I had a good time. Hopefully I'll get to try my hand at DMing soon. (The present DM is wanting to run Ravenloft...but not sure if the present players will want to run it.)

Dude! how often do you get to just be a player? let it all unfold THEN take over if you have to.:p

I will. But if I'm ever to get PLAY in a Scarred Lands campaign, I need to kind of demstrate how its done. ;)
