Smallville 2-25-03-cooooooooool

Just to agree with everyone a geek-gush a tad....

OH. MY. GOD.

The music, Reeve, the plot, Lex... too... much... coolness..... gak!!

MAN! I thought it was the pinacle of the ep just seeing Chris Reeve there and having him fill Clark in on what little he knows, but I didn't expect a TOTAL PASSING OF THE TORCH!!!! :D They couldn't have done that any better and with any more class. Pa Kent's speech with Chris Reeve's speech along with Jor-El's final message to Clark was just too much.

They have so many ways they can go with this now. They have a nemesis (or ally?) waiting in the wings with the comatose doctor. They have the always splendid Lex Luthor hot on Clark's trail. We have a snooping Chloe who we know won't stop prying. And there is still the mystery of the cave.

The question for me is: Will Clark and Lex team up at one point because of Jor-El's influence, then have Clark break it off when he realizes who he really is? What will finally push Lex over the edge and what part will Lionel play in all of this. Then we have Ma Kent's child on the way not to mention future guest appearances by Chris Reeve. It's ripe for the pickins for plots. I never imagined the show would be this good.

EDIT: I loved the Christopher Reeve Foundation ad at the end with the old and new Superman (no, I haven't forgotten about George Reeves, but he wasn't there :P). It was very light and it made me feel pretty good and didn't bring me down like so many other commercials of that type. Well done.

SPOILER and SPECULATION...

Go elsewhere if these bother you...

Great touches...

the music refrains... perfect.

the whole chris reeve bit including the little bit after credits about the charity... wonderful...

I took a different take on the

We now have a kryptonian info dump device KIDD in LEV's cave that need the magic bouncing hot potato(e) octagon to activate. Lex already knows about the octagon.

We know the KIDD will fry normal human brains.

Lex does not know specifically what triggered the brain frying but we have every reason to believe that WHEN he gets the octagon back he WILL like any good curious george stick it in the hole in the cave since he doesn't know thats what fried the linguist brain.

Net result... lex gets info dump.

Lex is a kryptonite puppy having been given vitality and baldness and (speculation) intellect by it. What if he comes thru the info dump without scrambling too much.

You now have the justification for Super-science from krypton giving lex a tech edge out the wazoo. You also have the possibility of having Lex's already high volume ambition pushed even further if he gets the same "rule them with strength for they are a flawed species" message in that download that clark got from his spaceship, or something like it.

in one fell swoop we have lex with the tech-boost and knowledge to be a credible threat, we have ample outside influence for a transition to megalomania, and we even have the seeds for even another reason for clark to tolerate lex's criminal sideas much as he does... after all its not lex his friend, its Lex on kryptonian mind altering energy.

Overall a wonderful way to round out sweeps weeks.

That was a very good episode. Definitely in the top 5, after Lineage and Insurgence.

I was so damn stoked when they kicked up the FoS theme when Clark walked into the Planetarium. And then the Superman movie theme twice. I like that Clark's parents looked old in this episode. They have no idea how they're going to deal with this, but they can't let clark know just hoe helpless they are. I think Jonathan really showed this at the end when they were in the barn. That look on his face over Clark's shoulder? Pure gold.

I also agree that the linguist will become some sort of bad guy. I was thinking Brainiac, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe Brainiac will be Dr. Hamilton.

The only thing that sort of bothers me is that I wanted the existence of Krypton to be an unknown. I think it would have been cool if Clark had that one hope, only to have it dashed in the future. Also the possible existence of other Kryptonians on Earth or elsewhere. No need to slam those doors so soon. But those are just preferences.

The PSA was cool. Made me wish I had cash to send them (stupid college loans!).

All in all, I'm very happy with this ep. See? It doesn't take too much to make me content. just a good show. Smallville has so much potential, and I hate seeing it wasted. Episodes like these give me faith in the series as a whole.

From someone who's behind a few episodes (just watched the super-jump ep):

Maybe Martha's baby has a phisyology slightly altered by the ship, and gets strong and fast like Clark did when he grew up.

Maybe it's a girl.

Maybe she's blonde, like Pa Kent.

Maybe, in 15 years, when Clark is 31-32 and fully Supermannized, she'll start playing with her newfound abilities.

And maybe her name will be Kara.

Supergirl, anyone? :D

I've always found the blend of the various Superman mythoi they use on Smallville to be highly intriguing.

For the record, it seems to be closest to the 70's/early 80's Superboy, with some blends of the Byrne/very early Superman.

Chloe is new, but seems to be a way for the writers to isolate the comic Lana's inquistiveness. I like her.

Pete was *told* CK's identity, instead of finding out accidentally.

Lex was indeed Superboy's best friend early on. Though the *very* earliest Superman (and Byrnes') don't have them meeting until adults.

The "meteor shower" is completely new, and seems to serve as Miller & Cough's explanation for meta-humans in the DC universe. I'm still waiting for the ultra-secret gov't agency investigating all the weird happenings though.

Brianiac, was in the Old School Superman, an Android who (among other things) miniaturized a city of Krypton and it's inhabitants (Kandor). In the early 80's they completely revamped him to a much more metallic robot (his current form). It was Byrnes (in the early 90's) who re-introduced Brainiac as a Circus Magician possessed by an alien's psyche.

Red Kryptonite is significantly different from the books, but at least its now consistent in its effects.

I haven't seen Gold Kryptonite, but I imagine it's threat (permanent power loss) will be to useful as a plot point to ignore. We should expect another plot point (Blue Kryptonite, maybe?) to undo its effects.

Believe it or not, the Kryptonians have consistently been portrayed as a technically advanced "retired" warrior race. The main difference here is the degree, and the more active stance.

I wonder if they'll ever bring back Krypto? I miss the dog.

More importantly, I wonder how they'll reconcile this (or even attempt to reconcile this) with "Lois and Clark"?

OK, I actually had to miss part of this episode. Did we ever get to hear the second half of the message? Go ahead, spoil me. :)

The PSA was nice--especially when the entire crew starting laughing (off screen) at the end.

And I don't think they'll ever reconcile this with 'Lois & Clark'--there's no need to do so.

Did anyone ever think that Bo Duke could really act? Wow.

Yep, I have to agree. If there were any downpoints to this episode, I didn't see them through the haze of wonder the ep. overall gave. I'm still getting chills from the use of the Superman movie themes. I had a grin a mile wide on my face for like 3 hours. :P

But then again, I'm one of those guys who's heart is still broken over Chris Reeves' injury. And bouyed to the heavens over his (ever-so-slight, but existant) recovery. It's wonderful that he could deliver his lines without the damned machine breathing for him. I'd be giddy if they found a way to make him a semi-regular character.

(Although, I still think he'd make The Perfect Jor-El, although not the "Rule them with strength" Jor-El we're getting here)

That's the obvious take, yes.

But... what would be the point, really? Even if the show runs seven more years, she'll never be more than a child. And for most of those years, Clark won't even be where teh girl's being raised. Why bring in a piece fo the mythos that you won't use?

Unless we're going to turn the show into Clark Kent - Superbabysitter...
