Smallville "Witness" 4-29-03 [SPOILERS]

John Crichton

First Post
Wow, the kid from Home Improvement got himself to guest star on both Buffy and Smallville this year. Crazy. And he played the same character in both. Natch. ;)

Spicy Chunks

Anywho. I enjoyed this episode. I liked Clark getting smacked around a bit. I liked Chloe's meltdown. I loved Lionel's offers and Chloe's responses. More Lionel! More Lex! >ahem< The Lana plot was well-done and I have to say that I despise Mr. Small's wife (gotta stand by your man :p). The usage of the word Kryponite feels right and I'm glad they have the correct name for it now. "Meteor rocks" just didn't sound right.

I'm glad Pa Kent did the right thing because of his pregnant wife. I'm glad to see that the new sheriff hates all the teenage boys in Smallville, not just Clark.

I also liked the (probably unintentional) Unbreakable reference.

Bland Chunks

Not really a minus, but I really wanted to see more of Lex's reactions to all of this. I'm sure we'll see it in a future ep. While I enjoyed Clark getting chucked into a fire and him busting out, I wish they hadn't already ruined that scene for me in the previews. I do like that Clark is getting a rep (see Unbreakable reference) but I'm not sure I like how they used it in this ep as I figured it would get a bit more attention.

Overall Rating: ***

Note: Since I like it and since he's not doing Smallville reviews anymore I am borrowing Herc's rating system from aintitcool.com. Pardon the presumption.

First freaking Smallville I have seen in long time. I liked it. I liked Clark being thrown into blast furnace.

But some questions-

1. Episode mentioned Who did destroy the School Newspaper. My bet Chloe, she has some sort of evil twisted superstrong alter ego that just manifested itself.

2. Home Improvement kid throws Clark into blast furnace, next day sees Clark at school. Then attacks his parents, gets butt kicked at the end of the episode. Now did this kid lose all memory of what Clark is or out of a sese of fair play decides to keep the secret?

3. Then need a show based around the Luther :D

1. My bet is Lionel. There's a lot of odd things going around Smallville. Chloe's friend Clark appears to be at the middle of most of it. Best get on the investigative reporter's good side. It's a win-win situation for him.

2. No, I think that the bad guy has a secret, too--the distilled meteor rock formula. In the context of the episode, if he reveal's Clark's secret, he likely reveals his own, and he might not want that, for whatever reason. Maybe he made a deal with Lex?

Let me start with this episode was pretty darn good. The actor playing Lex is doing an awesome job, he is so comfortable with the character and role, IMO the best Lex to date.

I am betting that the Home Improvement kid told Lex about Kent. I think Lex and Lionel both know a great more about the Kent's than we believe. I can't wait to see how Lionel exploits Chloe's relationship with Clark to get an inside view of who and what Clark is.

1. The Kids would probably assume that Clark got his powers the same way they did – Kryptonite. They don’t want to reveal their secret so for now his is safe (That one kid probably still has hopes of the pros and all that).

2. I bet Lionel had the Torch ransacked – perfectly in character to have that done and then come in looking like a hero.

Well, it's getting repetetive, but...

1)I'm pretty sure Lionel had some thugs trash the Torch. Gives him an opportunity to come in and be a nice guy, offering Chloe all the things she wants (and the "friend" she wishes she had). Thus, Lionel gets himself an inside track with one of the people who knows a lot of what's really going on in Smallville.

2) As noted, the bad kid doesn't talk becauseHe doesn't want to let his secret out. Once he's finally dragged off to jail, his talk probably means little.

Though, remember the final scene - Clark asks Lex who he thinks has the rocks, and Lex answers, "I have my suspicions". Perhaps he's been listening to the baseball player, hm?

quite uncharacteristicly, i really liked this episode. i liked the contrast between the childish behavior of the adult Mrs. Smalls and the very mature behaviour of the teenage Lana. what adult tells a 16-year-old: "you can have my man, you won"??? that was just awful.

i liked seeing Clarke get his fist real taste of pain. made me flash forward to all the big battles Superman gets into and prevails despite the odds.

i liked Pa Kent running with his tail between his legs, as opposed to the "we can handle anything" attitude that he's had in the past. it also gave Clarke a chance to show some maturity, and gave his parents a chance to show some faith in him. i was getting a lil (read a LOT) tired of the constant worry over a kid who can shake off bullets.

i kinda was looking forward to Clarke sticking a tree over the Kryptonite burial ground. afterall, it looked like he'd toppled one to bury them. but alas, 'twas not to be. probly couldn't get that close to it, i guess.

all in all, a pretty good ep. with nice character and overall plot development.

Yeah, I liked Clark actually being in physical danger. Added an element that was missing in other eps.

Ma & Pa Kent have never really worried about Clark getting hurt, they have always been more concerned about people learning his secret. That would ruin their lives. I don't think they are worried too much about anyone hurting Clark physically.

Confession: This is the first Smallville I've seen since Christopher Reeve guested, so this is the first I've heard that Lex is engaged. Faulty old-man recall at work here but is this "Helen" the doctor who knows Clark's secret? If it is, then I think this could be the first big step towards the Lex/Superman archnemesis thing. I'm not sure how exactly, but it just strikes me as a golden opportunity for the writers to spring that on us, especially with the increasing distance and mistrust between Lex and the Kents.

I totally think Lionel had the Torch trashed. If Chloe's got half a brain cell, shouldn't she come to that conclusion in a nanosecond? What kind of investigator is she? Okay, the emotionally wounded kind. I can't stay mad at Chloe :)

That was so sweet seeing the Home Improvement Cultist return, only to get his arse handed to him again. BWAH-HA-HA-HA! I tell you, whenever a former Home Improvement brat gets beaten up, an angel gets his wings. And what was he so worried about his secret for? Major League Baseball doesn't ban Andro, why would they ban Kryptonite breath spray?

Good ep. Will return to my religiously attentive viewing pattern starting next week, although this ghost story thing sounds awfully sketchy, empasis on awful.
