Guys,The two key selling points for 4E (mentioned many news reports earlier) are that:- no class is required for playing (hence the prevalence of special abilities emulating certain abilities of other classes),- each class has abilities it excels at.

I can buy that to a point, but I don't imagine that it will feel true when the game is actually in my hands :)

That's my question. Is this just another nail in the coffin? Is there any hint that the rogue hasn't been replaced by magical means?
Is that's the question, then the answer is no. The thief/rogue has never been obsolete. No reason to think any different in 4E.

You're assuming rogues are obsolete, and asking if there's any evidence they aren't. Which is impossible to provide since we don't yet have 4E. The onus is on you to demonstrate that the rogue is obsolete.

Actually, the point of my post was to ask what people's opinions were and not to defend some kind of thesis and get the typical personal attack responses (those days are done). I think the 3.5 arguments showing that the rogue's abilities had been duplicated makes it clear for 3.5. Maybe I've been around this game too long, but there are pretty clear trends. The eladrin note just add's another aspect to that.

Eladrin = "Blink-elf".
I snorted Dr. Pepper out of my nose when I read this.

With a limited teleportation ability, why would anyone want to play a non-eladrin rogue? It's like getting to flank any opponent whenever you want, without having to worry about movement. Pop to the other side of an opponent, sneak attack. Lather, rinse, repeat.

There has to be more to this "almost teleporting" ability than we are being told. Because at the moment, it sounds like a balancing nightmare.

Balancing thought re: Fey Step.

In the playtest example, the eladrin doesn't use the ability until the goblins leave his line of sight. Is it possible this is a restriction, rather than a tactical choice?

Who would want to have a rogue in the party? You can after all send all your slots and cash in Find traps spells, constant Detect enemies, Arcane eye and Clairvoyance, Knock, Danger sense, Charm Monster, Invsibility, Silence, the most expensive Spot, Listen and Tumble enhancements, and some sort of custom magic item that lets you deal extra damage to flanked enemies.

That would be an awesome way of balancing the ability. Ive seen plenty of cartoons with leprechauns where the could not disapear unless you took your eyes off them.
