D&D (2024) So IS it a new edition?

For whatever reason we as a whole still expect a little more from the makers of Magic the Gathering. Use Whatever explanation that explains this cognitive dissonance to you.

3.5 was a new edition. 4e Essentials was not. The 2024 revised Core books lie somewhere in the middle. I say it's on the "no" side, but to each their own.

I doubt it. I've played with the worst DM ever. He had us running around a city with no goal or intention just to buy time because it was clear he had no clue what he was doing. It got so bad that one of the players said, "Cmon this is ridiculous, is there an NPC on a street corner wearing a sandwich board that says adventure this way?"

I think the bigger issue, and really this is a failing of WotC's marketing -- not coming up with a clear name for this new edition. I blame the whole One DnD thing.

The changes seem to me on par with the ones between AD&D 1e and 2e and less that those between 3.0 and 3.5. So, a new "edition", but highly compatible and inter-operable.

Call of Cthulhu has had how many editions? But each of those editions of CoC seem more similar to each other than D&D 2014 is from D&D 2024.

I've played with many DMs and myself included that could randomly pick up the phone and get a pickup game organized, with everyone playing in under an hour with zero prep. Honestly some of those were our best games too.

It's a new edition. Most rpgs have new additions while keeping the core mechanics the same. D&D is one of the ver very few games that will do complete overhauls.
