D&D 5E So long and thanks for all the fish!

I have been on at least one forum that was frequently toxic. All are in at least small doses.

Maybe I am a naive wiener, but I have had more productive discussion on this site than any other. I have gotten lots of ideas about things I might like to try, a lot of inspiration for my own creativity and a better understanding of the game which is a feat given the length of time I have played.

You really have to ignore ass-hats or have a thick skin and talk with people that have interesting ideas. This has been a great site. One that does not exist anymore was the epitome of dysfunction...you need to compare and contrast more before jumping ship.

Or not. Do what makes you happy. I am happier without social media, that is for sure.

Rules-lawyering drama queen but not a munchkin
There is something worse than posting in a thread and getting ignored because other people are busy engaging with each other; it's posting in a thread and the thread immediately dies.

For a while I had "I've become death, destroyer of threads" as a signature. It seemed that whenever I posted the thread would just die right away.

I do't think that's an appropriate use of a semi-colon.

:)

Punctuation rules vary from language to language; not my fault english ones being particularly arcane ñ_ñ

I think one of the reasons this site is one of the better ones is because the focus is on RPGs. Not a political/religious/off topic forum under the guise of selling itself as an RPG forum.

As for someone who leaves because they aren't getting the attention they want? Um...good luck I guess?

I tend to enjoy the conversations and arguments that happen here for the most part. Sometimes they devolve into the same tired old topics that I couldn't care less about, which is usually the point where I drop out. But sometimes, like Oofta, there are times I just get too busy to devote the kind of energy required to keep something going. Or it gets to the point where the posts on page 45 have the exact same content and arguments as the posts on page 15, so why keep jogging in place?

This forum isn't toxic, not by a long shot. But it's also not a very open and accessible community. Largely because it's old. There's a lot more forum goers here who date to the 4e and 3e era, or even 2e gamers. There's not a lot of first time gamers or new players here. There's a strong slant of optimisation and RAW, as well as a lingering undercurrent of edition warring.

There's a stark difference when you compare this to the D&D Facebook group or one of the reddit D&D communities:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDBehindTheScreen/
https://www.reddit.com/r/UnearthedArcana/

The first one in that list typically has as many posters as this forum, but the discussions are night and day. There's a lot more sharing of cool stuff or stories, a lot more asking of advice, a heck of a lot more pictures.
Here, there's a lot more debates of the rules. What the best X is, if class or spell Y is good or bad, Unearthed Arcana evaluations, stealth, warlords, and general arguing. There really isn't a lot of people just talking about their game, getting advice, or generally being excited (or happy) about D&D. It doesn't feel like a fan forum for a hobby people love. There's not a lot of joy in these forums.

I'm also not much a fan of the use of the quote borrowed for this thread's title. It implies the OP is the majestic, hyper-intelligent dolphin here, who is abandoning us, the lowly, ignorant humans doomed to imminent destruction.

That's first time I've heard anyone say something nice about Reddit :) I thought they were slightly above 4chan! ;)
