So next year is the 25th anniversary of Indiana Jones...

Next year, 2006, will mark the 25th year since the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark was released to movie audiences around the world. I was just wondering if anybody had heard any rumors or plans from Stephen Spielberg or George Lucas to celebrate this occasion? When Star Wars turned 20 years old, we got the Special Edition trilogy released in theaters, and while I realize that the Indiana Jones Trilogy wasn't nearly as big or influential, they're still pretty darn popular.

Personally, I'd love to see theatrical re-releases of the Indiana Jones trilogy, but I haven't heard about anything like that happening. Anybody heard anything about the Indy franchise turning a quarter of a century old?

I saw Raiders in a cinema earlier this year. It wasn't a formal rerelease, just a 24 year old reel which was still doing the rounds. It was a real eye opener, the film feels totally different on the big screen than it does on a TV (the only place I'd ever seen it). You can also really see the difference between film style then and in recent blockbusters: there's less close ups, less fast editing and - dare I say it - it's artier than recent films. I'd really recommend seeing it in a cinema if you get the chance.

I've never seen Raiders of the Lost Ark or Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in theaters. When Raiders came out I was less than a year old, and when Temple of Doom came out I was only three. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, however, came out in 1989, and I have vivid memories of seeing it in theaters no less than three times. :)

Seeing Raiders and Temple of Doom in theaters is something I've always wanted to experience, however.

George announced recently that he plans to remaster the first Indiana Jones movie to more closely fit his vision of the movie as it should have been. Confirmed changes include inproved digital special effects, and the famous scene where Indy shot the swordman because Harrison Ford was sick that day will be reshoot to show the director's vision of a daring and dangerous fight against death.

:)

I plan to watch a DVD marathon of all three movies back to back with my kids as celebration of the event. I've seen all of them on the big screen, many times, and don't remember anything significant that makes it different from the DVD releases. Then again, widescreen DVDs, a large TV and 5.1 audio goes a long way towards replicating theater viewing, in most respects.

I hadn't gotten to see them in theaters until this past summer. One of the theaters here does 'classic' movies at Midnight every weekend, and Raiders was one of them this year. Mmm, mmm goodness.

As for anything special, I don't think anything's planned. Right now, they're still putting together a script for 4 that everyone will get behind. I believe its gone through about 7 or 8 revisions at this point, but everyone(including Ford) swear that the movie WILL happen.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a version Raiders of the Lost Ark where the angels that appear after the Ark is opened are added in using modern special effects technology; the original scene may have been impressive back in the early 1980s, but by today's standards the rotoscoped angels look very dated and unscary.

I would like them to keep the scene where Indy shoots the swordsman, though. It's just too much of a classic (Although I will admit that it could be interesting seeing Indy actually fight the swordsman as it was written in the original script). :)
