So sick of 2E fans bashing 3E

Of course you would encounter 2e fanatic with insider information JesterPoet, that is the kind of luck you have. There are extremists for every system out there and you will get arguments for every game that has editions. It isn't worth loosing any sleep over. They aren't really wrong (well maybe the guy with the "inside" information was) they just prefer their familiar game. As long as you are happy with the games you play and the stories that are told then who cares what anyone else says?

Well duh they're working on 4e. Microsoft is working on Windows "Longhorn," you know -- lots of differences between that and the venerable old Windows 95. And you can't believe how many Windows 3.1 fans were annoyed when Windows 95 came along... You don't need a consipracy theory to tell you that you're not going to sell more copies of Office/Eberron than you do the OS/PHB. So of course they're working on 4e -- they wouldn't survive as a corporation if they weren't trying to milk a cash cow.
Because WotC is much bigger than almost all the other players in the RPG industry (except possibly White Wolf), it seems like a lot of people tend to forget that WotC is merely a fairly small subsidiary of Hasbro in the larger business world. If you've got tens of thousands of employees and billions of dollars of annual revenue (like Microsoft), then you can afford to have people working on five and ten-years-out projects. But WotC is a fairly small company (on its own; Hasbro is substantially larger); it doesn't have the resources to spend on extensive market research, speculative and experimental development, and playtesting for 4e when 3.5e is less than a year old. So I really doubt anyone at WotC has done more than vague speculation about 4e, and possibly some market research to try and figure the best time to launch the game.

I honestly do not personally know any 2E folks. I do know lots of folks who mock D&D in general, but they are the type who prefer to talk about real roleplaying rather than sitting at the table and actually playing a game.

Interesting that I just had a similar conversation with my spouse (not over gaming): No matter WHO you are, where you are, SOMEONE will be talking trash about you. No sense getting worked up over it.

The minute someone describes another gamer's pastime as "juvenile", it's a sure sign of the same even happening, all over and over and over again.

END RESULT: nothing to get worked up over. You lose far more sleep and mental calm over the incident than they even give a thought to it. So, don't berate them and theirs in retaliation, just tell them you're sorry they feel that way, and they're entitled to their opinion. Nothing ticks a teaser off more than to find out you don't care what they think. ;)

We gamers as a whole need to mature. Acting this way is still being like a highschool freshman or seventh grader.

Not just gamers, human beings in general. As a species, we're prone to some seriously pointless behavior. I mean cripes, how many people have been beaten to a bloody pulp over sporting events?

The only reason gamers are at all different is that, supposedly, since our game is reading-based, we should be slightly more intelligent and reasonable. Alas, theory and practice...

I've never experienced that attitude at all. In fact, everyone I know enjoys all editions of the game. Each has its own feel, nostalgia and playability.

There are a lot of people whose tastes ossify. They simply have lost interest in putting any effort into trying something new. That in itself would be fine, but the same people usually mistake their petrified preferences and tendency to think the same thoughts over and over again for over a decade for acquired wisdom.
