So... What have you heard about the Dungeons & Dragons Online game?

Anything but Eberron...They should have set it in FR or GH....Eberron is just wanky, in my opinion...I actually was gonna even buy a new computer for this, guess I gotta try WoW instead.

And my reason is WarForged. A completely lame race...

Oh great, this is what I was afraid of Storyteller01. Waaah, waah, Warforged, waaah waaah, it's not D&D, waaah, Eberron is teh suxx0r!

Don't you think there's MORE than enough FRealms out there online, what with NWN and ID2? Plus, going with Eberron and the purposely-left-blank continent of Xen'Drik gives the developers A FREE HAND.

This way they don't have to worry about GH canon Nazis, or the not-so Forgotten Realms' massively developed setting where a boatload of people have committed the map to memory.

I said I was sorry!

That "twitch gaming" comment is troubling. I found NWN's combat system engaging enough, as far as speed was concerned. Well I guess we'll see what the finished product is like and I'll be checking the reviews. Until then, I think I'll try out that tasty looking Guild Wars.

Who knows, it might get me all the way to NWN2.

I too will not be partaking of this product. For several reasons, including the fact that it's set in Eberron. Call me old fashoned, but this attempt to "freshen" up D&D for the kids just doesn't sit well with me.

That's not to say I disapprove, though. Kids need something that's interesting to them, just like I want something interesting to me. So on that basis, I hope Eberron will do what it was designed to do. It's just not for me. It just doesn't "feel" like D&D the way I know it.

Second, I also dislike twitch systems. And I don't like the "EQ" style of MMORPG. I like having distance between spaces. I think it's ignorant to take a "beam me up to the adventure site, Scotty" approach to an entire world. I much prefer the UO style. Sure, there can be shortcuts, and travel magic. But it's also fun just to EXPLORE. Pick a direction and head off - not knowing who or what you'll run into. What's over that mountain range? What's in the middle of that swamp? What's past that forrest, or hidden in that cave you spotted from the road? You lose all of that when you just say, "Well, we need to kill a beholder to get our next level. They are located at Beholder Cave 01, so let's jump there first, then back to town to sell our loot."

You miss the "random encounters" that make heading off into uncharted territory so exciting.

Guys.. go read this page before you make your "Inspired" decisions regarding to how the game plays.

Seriously.. had I seen this thread two days ago.. I would of been in the I couldn't care about the game camp.. because my information on how they were really going to do the game was seriously.. Out of Date.

I also didn't explore the information on their site enough at first. I admit this.

But this game.. isn't going to be WoW, or EQ, or EQ 2, or AC 1, AC 2, AO, SB, MxO, CoH.. or any other game were used to.

They are catering to roleplaying and D&D players.

Okay so you don't like Eberron. Don't play a Warforged. Pretend they don't exist. Whatever.

My point.. this game is being put together for us.

Sure they are focusing on stepping away from vast areas that are there to take time.. solely because it is there to take up time.

They are focusing on using the city as the hub, so you go off on your adventures with your friends. Yes.. I said your friends. It's amazing how many of them we have when we play these MMO's. And they decided to avoid making a massive EQ.. or WoW.

They are focusing on what we do when we play D&D.

*drum roll*

Go on adventures.

And the twitch combat commentary.. is unfounded, and if you haven't seen the IGN videos.. especially the one with Ken Troop talking.

Y'all don't know what your talking about.

:p Still wish they had done FR so we could have Rappen Athuk and Orcus. :p

But in any case, I'll pick this up...if only cause my table-top gaming died years ago.

I was just reading through the developer posts on the DDO forums, and god-damn, these are the people I want to design the game. When a developer comes right out and says
Xundau
On "Gimped" Characters:
It seems that a lot of developers have looked at the balance problems of some of the early commerical MMORPGs, and decided that allowing players to gimp their characters was a bad thing.

In order to prevent this, some of the more recent MMOs have decided to group characters into broad archetypes (tank, healer, damge-dealer, etc.) and limit character choices in order to ensure that each character can perform competently in their archetype duties. While this means that there are fewer gimpy characters, the side effect of all of this (as you pointed out in your post) is a cookie-cutter effect where many characters seem virtually the same.

I'd just like to let you know that we're not going that route. Our character creation and advancement systems adhere pretty closely to the D&D rules, so you should expect to have about as many customization options as in PnP, which is a lot. If you want to try an unconventional build, that's your perogative.

Sure, it may make min-maxing an ultimate goal of the game. But it also makes roleplaying a lot more feasable. No MMO has come close to the character options and flexibility that DnD offers, I'm glad to see that's changing.

Update: I want to have this designer's children:

If you have to shout "LFG" for an hour, we've screwed up.
