D&D 5E Some recent tweets.

How would you have handled the difference between spell scrolls and protection scrolls or any other form of theoretically possible but not listed in the DMG expendable items in the shape of a scroll?

I would have called protection scrolls "Parchment of Protection," or something like that, to make it clear it's not a scroll as that term is normally used in the game.

@nirvanstryder Slow spell wording confusing. Written as saving throws initially & once more than spell lasts for duration.
JeremyECrawford You make a save vs. the spell. Fail: you're slowed till the caster's concentration ends or your later save succeeds.
SteveY Only "Evocation" labelled spells qualify for Sculpt Spells (PH, 117) — or any?
JeremyECrawford The wizard's Sculpt Spells works only with evocation spells, including ones gained from other classes. #DnD
MichaelHall8585 Running a game where bad guys are using nets. Am I reading right that attacks with a net are always at disadvantage?
JeremyECrawford A net attack usually does have disadvantage because of its range. #DnD
ENrikisinger Does Misty Step conserve the initial speed of the wizard before casting it? Or does the wizard appear with 0 speed?
JeremyECrawford The misty step spell expends none of the caster's speed. #DnD

@Shippendale Does the unconscious condition merely cancel out the disadvantage on a ranged attack regarding a target being prone?
JeremyECrawford That's correct. Advantage and disadvantage nullify each other. #DnD
mattdomvilleDo paladins have to choose a deity? Is following a philosophy or ideal acceptable?
JeremyECrawford There's no rule that a paladin must serve a deity. But a DM might require it, depending on the world used. #DnD
JeremyECrawford What's the 1st rule of Sage Advice? The DM—not the rulebooks or the sage—is the game's adjudicator. The 2nd rule? Don't forget the 1st. #DnD
@WeHaveSnacks What's rule 3? Otherwise it's a very short manual.
JeremyECrawford Rule 3? Tasty snacks brighten any session of #DnD!

MonumentGames What is your stance of XP rewards for traps, and if you are for it, any suggestions on determining XP values for said traps?
MikeMearls I don't award it myself, but I also use quest or story based XP awards.
jonBolds Idea: Make a release of 5th Edition all about making the game classless. Call it Dungeons & Marxism.
MikeMearls race and class continue to be the biggest issues facing Dungeons & Dragons

@knlndrs When a druid wildshapes, does the druid gain the new forms max hp or the printed average hp; i.e. Dire Wolf 5d10+10=60HP or 37HP
MikeMearls printed average
@_Matafer So Druids don't roll new HP everytime they wildshape? They just take the average?
MikeMearls correct

@jaa0109 If a Changeling alters it's form, does its voice also change? Or physical appearance only?
MikeMearls voice too
gaaran00b can a Changeling use this to mimic people's voices?
MikeMearls only voice of current form
Carljonard In Out of the Abyss, are NPCs accompanying the party supposed to get an equal share of XP, as described on page 93 of the DMG?
MikeMearls yes, if they contribute meaningfully to an encounter
MikeMearls one alternative - slice goes up and hand wave all fighting outside of PCs

Fantastic thread! Many thanks.

I have a suggestion, if I may. Would you consider editing the first post (or the first posts) of the thread by adding the content posted in your successive posts? This way, one could find a sort of repository all in one place.

Will think about it.
When I posted thse kind of treads some people prefered me posting them by 4 or 5, becouse that makes it easyer to quote a single tweet and awnser.
Instead of posting from a huge post of tweets.

Sounds like a good idea, but I think that they preferred keeping the old (possibly somewhat confusing) terminology as an homage to AD&D.

That certainly makes a lot of sense. My idea (if it's not too bothersome for you) was to do both: add shorter posts and keep editing the OP. I realize that this could be a bit of a chore.

ReApErCDN Question about 5e: Would you allow a Paladin's Divine Sense to register Tieflings due to their infernal heritage?
JeremyECrawford I wouldn't. A tiefling is a humanoid, not a fiend, and therefore escapes the notice of Divine Sense. #DnD
evilgeniusEnt Does casting a spell as a ritual require concentration if the spell doesn't normally require it?
JeremyECrawford Concentration is required when casting any spell, including a ritual version, for longer than 1 action. #DnD

@curbstompt13 how do movement increasing effects specifically the Fleet of Foot racial and Mobility feat interact with wildshape and polymorph
MikeMearls if I recall correctly, things that are flat bonuses add up. double only once, even if multiple things do it.
MikeMearls however, feats and racial abilities do not apply to your new form unless the poly effect specifically says otherwise
dalebert11 From Wild Shape: "You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source..."
MikeMearls there you go - keep those bonuses!

@curbstompt13 so just for clarification Fleet of Foot which sets base movement to 35 is replaced by whatever movement is obtained by wildshape
MikeMearls yes
JTburling love the new UA. Can you move on the turn provided by Ambuscade?
MikeMearls yes
JTburling UA Ranger: Spirit Guardian benefits at higher lvls, 7,11, etc - are they powered by the same single “use” as the lvl 3 ones?
MikeMearls yes, though not all of them will require it and this ranger would gain more uses at higher levels
JTburling UW Ranger Skirmisher’s Stealth - can the Ranger only take the bonus action to hide at the end of their turn?
MikeMearls yes
Anthon_noire rules for Player created spells are paramount to our gaming group. Will spell research rules (ala AD&D S&M) exist in 5e?
MikeMearls perhaps eventually, but such rules for players to use (as opposed to DMs) aren't something we have on the docket
