Something my son said... do you remember

This one's a bit bizarre, so feel free to call me a weirdo.

Following the birth of my second son recently, I was introcucing him to his elder brother, who is two-and-a-half. When I tried to tell Ethan, my eldest, that the baby was called Jacob he decied that the baby should instead be called "Bargle".

Which brings me to the 'purpose' of this post (if something as frivolous as this can be considered a 'purpose' :) ).

Does anyone remember the old boxed D&D products? If I remember rightly, the first proper end-of-level baddie you faced, should yo have run the set adventure in the book, was Bargle, a 3rd level Chaotic Magic User.

Does anyone else remember Bargle, or have I got this slightly wrong..?

cheerio, and apologies if I've wasted your time reading this thread,

Yep, that's right. He killed your cleric friend with a magic missile before you took him out. Ah, memories of the Basic set. :)

I recall a Bargle. Haven't the foggiest idea from where, but I do recall such an NPC, and a mage, even.

edit:

An afterthought: Maybe Bargle was never published, but is some strange "universal unconscious" construct. That would explain why several of us remember him, but can't say from where.

Not only was Bargle the main villain of the example adventure in the old Basic D&D Boxed Set (the red one), he was also a semi-prominent figure in the Mystara campaign setting.

He was the resident evil court wizard for some evil Baron.. can't remember the name of the Barony though.. argh! Damn my imperfect memory!

Bargle's Barony....

Wasn't the Barony Bargle hailed something like,

Black Eagle Barony

?

And wasn't he known as Bargle the Infamous?

I remember crossing a character crossing paths with Bargle at some point in a ADnD 2nd ed. game set in Mystara I think, but I don't recall many details as it's been several years.

You are correct.. Bargle was from the red set of OD&D books. He was also the leader of the Black Eagle Barony and chased out by halflings.

Just to let you know you're not nuts.. my son (1 1/2 at the time of my wife's second pregnancy) named his sister before birth as Bilbo.

Also, what ever happened to Zanzer Tem from Escape From Zanzer's Dungeon mini-module fame?

I certainly remember Bargle. IMG, the party defeated him, but later on (after converting over to AD&D), it turned out that he wasn't dead, and his align was Chaotic Good. So a rapprochement was reached, and he was a bit of a mysterious aid to certain members of the group.

At 15 years old, such things are easy to change in one's game. :)

Yes, yes. Bargle the Infamous.

The evil magic-user you went up against in the "introductory 1-player adventure" Player's Handbook in the Basic Set.

The same Bargle who hits Aleena the cleric with a magic missile and kills her.

(The same Aleena who is later reinstated into Mystara as a prominent character in the town of Threshold - the default starting town in the Basic/Expert Set).

The same Bargle whom you attempt to track down in the 1-player "dungeon by number" introduction later in the Player's Handbook.

The same Bargle who has a three-level dungeon - with the first level mapped and keyed, the second level mapped only, and the first level unmapped and unkeyed in the Dungeon Master's Guide of the Basic Set.

The same Bargle who was the court magic-user at Baron Von Hendrick's Black Eagle Barony in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos.

The same Bargle who is used as a plot hook all through Karameikos (specifically the Expert Set, where he has massmorphed an army into trees and put them under a sleep spell in preparation to attack Threshold in the "adventure seeds" and in the GAZ1 - The Grand Duchy of Karameikos).

Yeah, I remember Bargle. ;)
